How's it going everybody?
John McLennan here.
Hope you're having a great day.
In today's lesson we're going to [Eb] look at how to play Messin' with the Kid as recorded by
Junior Wells and Buddy Guy.
This song has a great blues feel.
It's in the key of C and it follows something called our 12 bar blues.
Now this is a rhythm part, but it's not necessarily playing chords.
It's playing more of a single note line and it's really funky.
It's a lot of fun to practice and work on your groove.
So make sure when you're done with this lesson to play it along with the recording as well
to help you get the feel.
Before we get into the lesson though, make sure to hit the thumbs up button and make

All right, without further ado, let's get into the lesson.
Messin' with the [F] Kid by Junior Wells.
I'm going to play 12 bars of this groove and then I'll break it down for you.
One, two, three, four.
[Bb] [C]
[G] [F]
[C] [C]
[G]
[F]
[C]
All right, so let's break this down.
We're playing a blues in the key of C and we're going to be using three chords.
A C, an F, [G] and a G.
That's going to be our [F] one, four, [G] and five.
Now instead of playing [C] grips though like that and sort of standard chord shapes, we're going
to be playing a rhythm lick that starts off with a third.
And so I'm playing the third fret of the A string and then the second fret on the D string.
And then we're going to slide [E] up to the seventh fret on the A string.
[G] Then we'll play five on the [C] D string.
So one E and a two and.
So a dotted eighth note there and then a sixteenth note.
One E and a two and.
And those are [Em] eighth notes with a grace note slide there.
One E and a two and.
[E]
And then [Bbm] we're going to go.
[C] And this is the [Bb] eighth fret of the D [Bbm] string.
One, two, three, four.
We'll do [C] four plucks there.
Then to one pluck on the [B] fifth fret of the G string.
Then back to the eighth fret [G] of the D string.
[C]
So one E and a two and.
These are going to be sixteenth notes so I'll just alternate pick [Bb] those.
Three E and a.
Down up, down up.
And then four and.
Those are eighth notes.
So three E and a four and.
[C]
And the rhythm pattern would go down, [Em] up, down, [G] down, [Bb] down, up, down, up, [Bbm] down, down
for my picking hand.
[C]
This is a cool way of playing a lick as a rhythm part.
So it's not necessarily like playing a C7 chord.
Now you could play a C7 chord in place of this, which is a great thing to practice as
well, just playing changes with the recording.
But see if you can try this line.
[F] [C] [F]
Hear this playing a lot in different blues feels.
And it's just cool to not play just straight up chords.
But still have it be a rhythm part.
Now I am muting a lot and [Eb] making it palm [C] muted there with my strum hand.
I just want to get it sweet.
[Gm] And have a good feel [C] to it.
And we're going to take that same [Dm] thing and we're going to bring it up to the seventh
fret here [B] where my first finger is.
So my first finger before was on the second fret.
Or if you're counting here, you could do third fret to eighth [C] fret, which would be your root
notes, you know, C [E] to F, whichever you want [B] to gauge that by.
But then we're going to do the same [F] lick.
[Em] This time [A] sliding into 12.
[C] 10 on the D.
[Bb]
13.
10, [F] 13.
So [C]
that's going to be two or four times on this first part.
[Dm] Then two [C] times here and two times here.
So that would sound like this.
One, two, three, four.
[F]
[C] [F]
We're going to take the [G] same lick that [G]
[C] we did on C and we're just going to bring it
up [G] one string.
So that would be now based off of your G root note, which would be your five chord.
[Bm]
[F] And then you're right there on your F to transition.
[Bb]
[G] [F]
[C] And then right there we're going to play [F] the lick.
[D] [C]
The last two bars.
[F] One and two and three and [Bb] four and one [C] and two and three and four and.
So that's going to be three to five on the G string.
Hammer.
And [Bb] back to three.
We'll do the same thing up one string.
[F]
And [E] then [C] six, five, three, six, [Eb] three.
[C] And [G] then [Bb] three, [C] six, three.
[Eb] [C]
[F] [C]
It's basically a C minor [F] pentatonic.
[Cm] [Bm] But we [F] add this note.
[C]
[B] A lot of times blues players will play [D] that note.
[Bb] [C] It's actually [D] the minor nine or the second of the [C] scale.
[F]
[D] [C] So it's a cool [B] sound.
The ninth basically.
No, not the minor nine.
It's the ninth.
The minor nine would be here, but this is the major nine.
[C] So anyway.
[F]
That's your lick.
[F] One and two and three and four [C] and one and two and three and four and.
All down picks there with the strum hand.
[Bb]
[C] Then we're back to our.
[C]
[F] [F]
[C]
[F] [G]
[C]
[F] [C]
[Gm] So at the end [F] there, what you do is you double the lick.
[C] [F]
[Eb] [C]
[Gm] There [Eb] you go guys.
That's my blues breakdown of Messin' with the Kid.
