What's up, guys?
Michael Gross here at Rockinguitarlessons.com and youtube.com slash rockinguitarlessons1.
That's Wilson Pickett with Mustang Sally.
You know, the song gets played millions of times in bars.
But people want to hear it.
And you may get burned out on it after a while.
But these are guitar lessons.
So I'm going to show you it.
It's the [D#] old rock and roll riff.
Okay, I got this off the original album from Wilson Pickett.
So, that's why I decided to pick it.
Ha ha ha ha.
Get it?
Alright, let's jump in.
Make sure your guitar is tuned standard.
There's palm muting involved here.
And sliding using power chords, the root 5 chords.
So, we're going to start on 7E, 9A.
You're going to pick strings 6 and 5 and slide it a half step sharp up to 8 and 10.
[C] And then the palm muting comes in.
So, you're sliding [B] it up.
Sounds like jailhouse rock, huh?
[C] Alright, so, once you get to your destination chord there, the 8, 10, palm mute all the rest of this.
String 6 and 5.
[F] Leave everything down, go pinky, 12A.
Lift your pinky [C] off.
And then pinky way up to 13A.
Two times.
And then move it back to 12A.
So [B] you [Cm] have
[F] Once you get that, guys, you've got this whole song.
He goes 12 times of this.
[B] [C]
[N] If you want to play along with it, it's 12 times from the start of the song.
And then what you want to do after that, in this progression, you guys probably recognize,
even if you're new on guitar, it's been used, Chuck Berry, any blues players used it, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Beatles, The Stones.
I mean, it's just that popular of a riff.
It's just been played in lots of different variations, Beach Boys.
So, do everything you just did, but drop it down to string 5 and 4.
And we're going to go four times through of it.
Okay, so
Do that whole thing four [F] times.
Be careful on your sliding.
Make sure when you do that half-step slide with the power chord that you're still hearing [B] two strings when you get up there, okay?
So, I'll go ahead and play it four times for you.
[F] Actually, yeah, I will.
[C]
[Fm] [C]
[E] And also, [N] this is a good song, really, to get used to the palm muting.
You know, your power chord with your slide, you don't palm mute, so your palm's lifted up, and then for the rest of it, it's down.
And then you've got to lift it.
So, it's good to get used to that bounce action, you know, that happens with palm muting.
Okay, then, after four times of that, you go back to the first one that you did on strings 6 and 5, and go four times through on it now.
[C]
Then, and by the way, this is a 1-4-5 progression, if you were wondering.
Go 9-A, 11-D, we're going to do the same thing on strings 5 and 4, and slide a half-step up to 10 and [F#] 12.
[G]
[E] And we're going to go two times through on this one.
[Gm] [D]
[Gm] [D] [F]
[N] And then we're just going to hit an F chord here, [Cm]
[F] I believe it's the major, 8-A, 10-D, 10-G, 10-B.
And you [N] hit it one time, and do a rest.
That's the whole jest of Mustang Sally.
So, have fun with it, it's a good one to learn.
Like I said, if you're a guitar player, you want to learn it.
And if you have questions, let me know, leave it [E] in the comment section, I'll clear it up for you.
[D] Make sure you tune standard, subgroup if you have to.
But the reason I say, when you go through something, and then you're going to repeat it, you know, three more times,
I want you to see the smaller subgroups.
I'm petting my cat here.
I want you to see the smaller subgroups, that way it makes things easier to memorize.
I mean, once you get through the one time, basically you have the whole song down.
You know, and then you have that one F chord that we do at the end.
So, that's the way I break things down, and it makes it a lot easier to memorize, and all that stuff.
So, that's it.
Be sure you subscribe to my YouTube channel.
Once you've done that, send me your favorite song pieces, and, you know, whether it's the chorus or verse, or intro and verse, or whatever.
Or if you don't really care, I'll just pick what I think the dominant guitar parts are,
and I'll figure them out for you the way these bands are actually playing them.
I usually go to the studio album version.
Sometimes I'll use the live version.
But, good stuff, man.
[G] Also, the Ultimate Beginner's Guide DVD is ready.
It's two hours of lessons.
It's my first DVD.

But the website will be a whole other thing.
No stone left unturned.
I want to make sure that this stuff you can apply and get better at.
So, the website's going to be a really cool thing.

I'll keep you posted.
And also, I'm getting ready, I think in November of 2012, to start Skype lessons.
I've had a lot of you subscribers that keep asking me if I do Skype lessons.
And at first I was like, no.
I mean, I know it sounds silly, but I just don't understand Skype.
I know what it is, but my kids know it, man.
And it's really simple, you know.
So, I think I'm going to go ahead and do that.
I'll do a tutorial on it.
And I'm hoping at the beginning of November of 2012 to be able to.
That way we can do personal lessons.
And it will be $35 per half hour, $60 per hour.
If you pay for the month, it will even be cheaper.
But, yeah.
So, we'll be ready for that, guys.
I'll probably do a tutorial on it.
I might do that right now after this.
And that's it.
Spread the word about me, Mike Gross.
Everything I'm doing, you guys rule.
We'll talk to you later.
See you.

_ Spread the word about me, Mike Gross.
Everything I'm doing, you guys rule.
We'll talk to you later.
See you.
