How to Play "Ohio" by Neil Young on Acoustic Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Hello, and sorry it's been a few years since I posted a video
I want to put up for you a good song that I love Neil Young who's one of my favorites the song is, Ohio
It's the acoustic version that I like from Massey Hall
1971
So it's a very easy song with only three chord shapes
But a few things technically that make it sound a lot like the original recording.
It's very cool
Starting with the tuning you probably mostly know what a drop D tuning is
But he goes a half step lower approximately in this recording, so it's actually going to be a C sharp on either end of the guitar and
[C#] You can tune accordingly [F] so it ends up being C sharp for that good low sound it sounds okay in a regular drop D
It's more convenient, but for making it sound like the Massey Hall.
[Am] I'm gonna go ahead all the way [G#] down, so it's C sharp [C#] G sharp
[D#m] C sharp F sharp [C#] A sharp
C sharp [F] so that's the tuning strumming
like a lot of Neil it's very
[G] Percussive a lot of palm muting so I like to really think of [D] this come up
[D#] [C] So sort [C#] of
[F#]
[C#] [B]
[C#] [F#]
[C#] [E]
[F] [C]
The chords are [C#] very simple D
Without the bottom finger to let that other
We're calling [G#] it a D.
We're in C sharp, but for simplicity a D without the bottom held [B] down
[E]
F without the bottom held down [B] and C
The only [G#] other chord form is we're going to come up two frets
And we're gonna fret the sixth and [C#] fifth strings
And then we're gonna bar the first two strings everything else is open underneath or you can mute this
D string which is the same note as this so you can leave it ring underneath, [F#] or you can let the pinky come down
That's a g7
[G#] Now the only thing else that will do differently those are the only four chords
But we'll slide up to the [F#] 10th and [E] still we won't fret the g7 this time.
It's the same chord shape without barred
But we we put our index on [C#] the B string and we mute
The [B] D string this is just another C.
[F#] No C chord
[C#] D
That's the other D
[F#]
[C#m] [G#]
[B] [G#] so the essence is
[C#] These get is picking out the correct notes when you're when you're playing these strings, so he always starts
Hard down on that E.
[B] I'm gonna pull out the treble notes that are important that give it the essence [F#] so it's
[C#m]
[B]
[C#m] [G#]
[C#m] [G#]
[C#] Sorry
[E] [F#]
[C#] [F#] [C#m]
[B] [G#] So you're really gonna play those treble notes coming through
[G#m] with the more standard
[C#]
[B] [C#]
[B] [C#]
[B] [G#] [C#]
[E] [G#] [C#]
[B]
[F#]
