My lesson this week has to do with your open chords, or your cowboy chords as I like to call them.
Because even though you'll keep learning new [F] chords and voicings throughout [Eb] the rest of
your guitar [D] playing adventure, these chords are, in my opinion, some of the most useful
ones you'll [Eb] ever learn.
So in this lesson, I'm going to show you a simple way to embellish them and get some
cool variations out of it all.
There are of course a million things you could do to embellish these chords, but an extremely
easy place to start is to simply try and unfret some of the notes so certain strings ring open.
Because for most of the common chords down here, like C, A minor, [Am] D, G and E, the open
strings are going to fit just fine and you can get some fun sounds out of simply lifting
one finger at a time.
So grab your A minor chord here for example.
And then try just leaving the D string open for a second.
Sounds pretty cool.
Or the G string.
[E] Or the B string.
[Am]
Or all of them.
[G]
[Am] [G]
[Am] It works as well.
Of course, if you hang on the variations too long, we start getting too used to that sound
and it gets a bit confusing to the ear.
But as long as you keep the variations somewhat short, you can get away with almost anything down here.
Try it with your other open chords.
E for example.
[E] Let's try the A string.
Sounds kind of country.
Try the D string.
[E]
Sounds very bluesy.
Try the G string.
[Em] [E]
[Em]
[Em] [E] Has that interesting major, minor, third thing going on.
[E] Or all of them.
[Em] [E]
A little interesting sounding, but it could work.
[C] Now grab your C chord for example.
Try the D string.
Make sure you're hearing it and that you're not accidentally muting it with your third finger.
It's really pretty.
Super useful.
Try the B string.
It's the major 7 sound.
Both of those together.
[C] Sounds kind of cool.
You can even try the A string.
Try all of them.
[G] [Em]
It gets a little messy sounding, but it works if you make it really short.
Now try your [D] D major chord.
Try the G string.
Pretty cool.
[D] Kind of country sounding.
[G] Try the B string.
[D]
Could work as well.
High E string.
This one is super useful.
[C] E and the G string together.
[D] [E]
Sounds really cool as well.
[D]
[N] So try this with all of your open chords and you'll open up the door to a million fun riffs,
chord licks and ideas.
And if you like this topic, there's a whole lot more to dig into in our Guitar Tricks Country course.
And that's it for our channel episode this week.
I hope you've enjoyed this simple but incredibly useful approach to the classic open chords.
