Hi there, I'm Andy Hilliard with 9to42 and today's guitar lesson is [Em] on
[E]
Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones.
[C] 9 to 42
[Am] Right, [Eb] great tune, love this song.
Paint It Black.
So, there's only two main parts that we need to learn.
It's the little [Em] riff part
and
[E]
the chords which go through the chorus which [Em] are [D] just
[G] [D] [Em]
[D] [G]
[D] [A] [B]
OK, so we'll start with the riff.
So, we're going to play it basically all on the B string.
We'll do a simplified version first and then we'll make it a little bit trickier,
make it sound cooler.
So, if you get your
you can use any finger you want really,
but I'm going to use my second finger.
And we're going to place it on the B string on the 5th fret,
so B5, second finger.
And try and get that finger so it doesn't touch the string nearest the floor.
OK, so it's right on the tip of the finger, not touching it.
So we play B5, [Em]
then let's slide it up two frets and play [Gb] B7,
and then B8, [Gm]
and then B10.
[A]
So [E] you've got this.
[Gb] 5, 7, [G] 8, [A] 10
And [G] then it's going to come back down those notes.
8, [Em]
7, 5
So you've got so far
[Gb] 5, 7, [G] 8, [Am]
10
[Gm] 8, [Gb] 7, [E] 5
And then you're going to play another 5.
5, and then fret 4, [Eb] back to 5.
[E]
[Abm] So far we've got 5, 7, 8, 10
8, 7, 5, 5, 4, 5
And then we're going to go up to fret 7 and go [Gb] 7, [E] and then 5.
And then the last two notes we're going to do a little slide from 5 down to fret 4.
[Eb] [Em] So the whole thing goes
5, [Gb] 7, [G] 8, 10
8, 7, [E]
5, 5, [Eb] 4, [E] [G] 5
7, [A] 5, [Eb] 4
So a little slide from 5 to 4.
If you haven't done a slide before, just keep the [E] pressure on it,
[Eb] play 5 and then move your finger across the fret wire to fret 4.
A little slide.
So it should [E] sound like this.
[Gb] [Gm] [A] [Gm] [Ebm] [E]
[Eb] [E] [Gb] [Eb]
And that's the riff.
To make it sound a bit more like the record,
what we do is we put an open E string in between each one of those notes,
[E] apart from the little slide.
So we play the note B5, and then play the open E string, the one nearest the floor.
[Bm] Then up to 7, open [Em] E, 8, [A] E, 10, [Em] E
[Ebm] And [E] [Eb]
[Em] then it sounds like this.
[Gb]
[E] [Eb]
OK?
So that's the little riff.
Then the chorus [Em] chords go E minor,
[D] D chord,
G, [G] D, [D] E [Em] minor.
[A] And it's going to do two beats on each of those,
apart from the E minor which is going to be two bars.
So it [Em] goes E minor, [D] D, G, [G] D, [D] E [Em] minor,
2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 4
And then it's going to do almost the same chords,
[B] but instead of the E minor in the end, it's going to go A and then a B chord.
So it goes E [Em] minor, D, [D] G, [G]
[D] D, A, [A] then a B chord.
[B] If you haven't played a B chord before,
because it's the one that everyone hates because it's a bit tricky,
one of the first hard chords we've got to play,
it's your first finger on A2, your third finger on D4,
but then it's going flat and holding down the next three strings.
And we're only playing the middle four strings on the guitar.
So the A, D, G and B strings.
So the chorus is [Em] E minor, [D] D, [G] G, [D] D, [Em] E minor.
E minor, [D] D, [G] G, [D] D, A, [A]
[B] B.
[Abm] If we put that together it sounds like [Eb] this.
1, 2, [Em] 3, 4
[D] So [G] [D] [Em]
[D] [G] [D] [A]
[B]
[Abm] I just put in a little bit of rhythm there, hitting each chord [Em] twice.
E minor, [D] D, [G] G, [D] D, E [Em] minor.
Play it eight times because there's two bars.
E minor, [D] D, [G] G, [D] D, [A] A for a whole bar, then B for [B] a bar.
1, 2, 3, 4
And that's the whole song.
I hope you like that one, it's a great song.
One little thing to bear in mind is that the track, every time I've heard it,
[Ab] it's a little bit out of tune, it's a little bit high.
It's probably because they recorded it on tape and when they mastered it it was playing a bit fast.
So bear in mind that when you're trying to play along to the song it will probably sound a bit dodgy.
Hopefully you've enjoyed that.
I'm just starting out on doing YouTube videos and stuff.
