_ In this video we're looking at CCR Proud Mary.
_ It's a great strumming song and
there's a lot of nice little harmony licks on the chords.
So you know not only
the strumming, [A] _ _ [C] _ _ [A] _
[F#] not only all that, we [D] got stuff _ like_ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [F#] _ we got you know _ _ _ [B] we got those
harmony licks.
_ [Bm] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ [N] So there's that kind of stuff to look at.
Other than that it's a
pretty simple song. _
This song was the first song I ever played in a band in
1973 when I was 10 years old because I had the sheet music and I saw a band on
the street playing it.
I thought it was cool that the chords change kind [C] of fast.
You know so this intro here goes like this.
[A] _ _ [C] _ _
[A] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ [G#] So and when you look at [A] that, kind
of crazy, they didn't [F#] care about the keys or anything.
They just played major
chords right?
You got a C then you got an A major [A] with the C sharp [C] _ and you [E] come
down G and F [F#] and then you got a D with the F sharp.
So it's just major chords.
But [C] anyway the intro here C and A if you don't know it.
[A] _
_ _ [C] _ _ [A] _ _ [G#] Then we got [G] a _ [F] _ G and [G#] an F
after that C and A.
_ _ [F] _ _ And then it's just _ [D] _ it's just [F] F to D _ [Dm]
but [G#] I think he just
probably puts his pinky there.
I don't hear that F sharp come [F] through the first
time.
_ _ [D] _ _ Like that.
So one more [C] time that's the intro.
[A] _ _ [C] _ _
[A] _ _ [C] _ _ _ [A] _ _ [F] _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ And other than that on the
verse we stay on D _ _ _ and then he just kind of strums it like that. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Three at a
time and then a riff. _
_ _ _ _ _ [Em] Then they go to an A chord and _ _ _ a B minor [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] and back to D.
And
that's it for the chords.
And we're gonna look at the lead solo and the harmony
licks now. _ _
So what we got here let's see at the very first chorus _ [A] _ when _ _ _ _
[Bm] _ _ he's on
that B minor _ _ [E]
he _ does a low [A#] harmony. _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ See there on a [Bm] B minor.
[G#] So he's gonna play
up to [D] the B and the D _
[Am] and [E] basically slide into that F sharp.
_ [D] _ _
[G] But he's gonna
put harmony notes on [Bm] that. _ _ _
[Em] You can play [D] the harmony the D you know the F sharp
with it.
_ _ E and [E] G and the F [G] sharp and A.
So you got [D] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ [Bm] _ like that.
He might do [E] _ _
[D] I'm [B] not sure I heard
that first one but you can do _ [Em] _
_ _ [D] _ like that. _ _
[G#] And then then the second [Em] Oh [D] rolling on a
river.
He does [E] a _ _ [D] that [G] part there on a D chord.
So you're just taking these notes
[E] out of the D chord.
_ _ _ I'm on the fourth string and the second string _ right out
of the D [D] chord.
And I'm taking the A and the F sharp there.
[C#] _ And you can just pick
them if your left hand can control just to play those two strings.
[A] _
Or you can
[G] pick the [G#] low one and use a [Am] finger to pop the top one.
[E] And _ _ the [A#] _
notes you're just
doing an A and the F [F#m] sharp _ [D] down [G#m] to the D and F sharp [D] from the D chord.
[C] _ _ [D] So _ _ [C] okay
_ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [A] then the second [F#] chorus he's gonna do that lick we did before but it's up an
octave.
So _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ [F#] actually it's a little different than up an octave.
[F] The low
part's up [A] an octave _ [F#] _
but he keeps those other same harmony notes. _
_ _ So you would
slide into that [B] B and [A#] then play the D and F sharp [D] like this.
[N] So he had that F
sharp before here he's playing [D] this just _ _ _
_ _ [F] like the [Bm] rolling on the river lick.
So
it's _
[Em] and [D] _ _ _ _ then he finishes off with that lick.
_ [D] _ _ [C] _ _
[A] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ [Dm] _
_ _ _ And then we get to this nice solo.
[A#] It's easy to play.
It's typical you know licks.
And if you watch a lot of my
videos you'll notice after a while this stuff's all the same.
It's not real
complicated. _
So what we often look at up here on the [D] D chord.
_ You take this part
of the D chord _ and _ play around on it right.
_ _ _ So what you're gonna do is play
these middle three strings _ and add this note _ and add also this G.
So that's like
a G chord G [G] D and B.
_ [D] _ _ So _ the lead solo slides into it. _ _
Starts off on the low
note and it goes like this. _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _
Like [F] that.
_ [D] _ Again _ _ the first one's low _ and then he
adds the G.
[D] _ _ And you can hammer [G] sometime or just [D] play direct.
He does both. _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ And
then he does this great lick _ _ _ which is another typical lick [A] you'll see me talk
about often.
[A#] Where you're just [E] sliding into the F sharp here _ with the [F#m] A. _ _
_ Like
[D] that.
_ _ And coming down _ to [E] the D.
D and F sharp there from the D [F#m] chord.
_ _ _ _ [F#]
And then
you're gonna [B] hammer on.
Play the middle two strings and hammer [Bm] that fourth
string like [E] that.
_ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [B] So that's the first [D] one. _
[G] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] And then you're gonna repeat that.
[D] And
he does an [G#m] F to F sharp there.
[D] The little blues F sharp. _
It's just more
[F#] convenient than all the way down to the E right.
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ And all you're doing there is
going down the chord _ playing [A] these notes. _ _
[E] F sharp and A and [Em] _ _ [D] down [E] to D and F sharp.
_ _ [D] _ _ [F#m] _ And F sharp and A.
[D] It's the same thing.
_ _ [E] Or you can play.
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] And then when they're on A
[G#] chord he's just gonna play the notes out of the A [A] chord.
_ [D#] Start on that A.
[A] _
Work up to the C
sharp.
_ _ [C#] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bm] Then when they're on B minor he's gonna do the same thing.
Start on the B.
_ [G] _
Up to that B.
_ [A] _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ [G#] And then they're back to the chorus.
_ [E] _ _ [D] _ _ And that's [C] it really.
But _ _ yeah I don't
think there's any other licks.
But it's just a it's a good strumming song.
It's
a fun song.
It's not too hard.
Let's you practice [A] chord changes here.
And then the
lead.
So I'll go through that solo once more for you.
Thanks for joining me.
We'll
see you next time lead [C] solo. _ _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ [D] _ _ _

_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ [A] _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [F] _ _
[Dm] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ It's a great strumming song and
there's a lot of nice little harmony licks on the chords.
So you know not only
the strumming, [A] _ _ [C] _ _ [A] _
[F#] not only all that, we [D] got stuff _ like_ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [F#] _ we got you know _ _ _ [B] we got those
harmony licks.
_ [Bm] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ [N] So there's that kind of stuff to look at.

_ _ E and [E] G and the F [G] sharp and A.
So you got [D] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ [Bm] _ like that.
He might do [E] _ _
