Hello there!
I had a request to go through reggae chords to kind of talk a
little bit about reggae chords.
So I'll kind of do a basic fundamental video here
on how to play reggae chords.
Type a chord real quick.
I go with a bar chord.
_ _ That is a standard bar chord.
To make it a minor chord, so this is an A, _ make it an
A minor, you just remove your [Am] middle finger. _ _ _
_ [A] Major, _ A minor.
[Am] _ And you can do this
all up and down the [A#] neck.
[B] _ At the B [Bm] major, _ B minor.
And so with reggae, I'm going to
go in between majors and minors.
That's a lot of the feel of a reggae tune.
You can
go between a major and a minor, just two different chords back and forth and you
get that reggae feel.
So let's do our A with a double skank.
I'll put in the
[E] description a link to how to double skank with your strumming.
[A] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Now let's drop
down to a B [F#] minor. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
Up to the A.
[A] _ _ _
Oh yeah! _ _ _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ If you want to start with the B minor, _
[A] _ [E] you can then go to the A.
That gives it a
little different feel.
[B] Just as nice though.
Let's start with the B minor.
[F#] _ _ _ Up to the A.
[A] _ _ _ _ [F#m] _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [F#m] _
_ [D] Now if you want to change the key, let's go to [G] a G.
And do the same thing.
G to A minor. _
[D] _ _ _ G, [Am] A minor.
_ _ _ _ _ [A]
G, _ _ _ [E] A minor.
_ _ _ We'll go A minor [A] to G. _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ [G] I'm going to go G [Am] major, A minor.
I'm going to add one.
I'm going to go a little bit farther down and I'm going to include the B [Bm] minor.
_ _ And then I'm going to go back up [Am] to the A minor.
_ And then I'm going to go back to the G.
[G] _ _ Sounds like this.
Follow [A] me. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ B minor, _ [F#m] _
_ [A] _ A minor, _ _ G, _ _ _ [E] A minor, _ _ _ [F#] B minor, _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _
A [G] minor.
_ You can do the sequence, you can mix it up a little bit.
So how I just went from the G [Am] to the A [Bm] minor,
to the B [Am] minor, to the A minor.
Instead [A] of going from G to A minor, [G] I'm going to go
from G, let's go down [A] from G [Bm] to B minor, [A] to A minor, to B [G] minor.
See how that sounds.
G, _ B [F#] minor, _ _ _ _ A [A] minor, _ _ _ _ [F#] G minor, _ _ _
_ [G] G.
So that is [F] something you can mess around with, experiment.
Play with some different sequences of chords.
But [G] play with those majors and [E] those minors.
_ _ _ _ [D] Another quick chord progression that is very common.
Not _ only in reggae, but in all sorts of music.
_ _ [A] A, [D] _
D, [E] E, _ _ G.
_ _ Now you'll [E] hear this in rock music.
_ _ [D] _ _
_ [E] _ [D] _ _ _ [A] _
_ [D] A, D, E, G.
Let's reggae it up now.
[A] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ Very common. _ _
_ [E] _ _ If [D] you want to hold out the chords, [A] you can do that. _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [G#] _
So those are [A#] just a few _ [C] different chord progressions that you can do for reggae.
And then as you saw, I was just playing bar chords, [G] just playing the bar chords.
So enjoy,
[Am] _
[Bm] keep playing, keep rocking.
Write some of your own reggae tunes [G] with this chord knowledge.
_ [Am] _ _ [Bm] _ _ [D] _ _ [Am] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ [Bm] _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [Am] _
