[Eb] Alright, today we're going to do a lesson on how to play the spoons.
The spoons are [N] what a drummer does at a party when there's a bunch of guitar [Bm] players around.
But it's an easy instrument, anybody can play it.
And [N] the way I learned was reading off the internet, which was very hard because I was
reading diagrams and whatnot.
So I'm going to make a video, [D] make it real easy.
[Ab]
Alright, first I'll show, uh, just so you keep the video [Bm] on, don't turn it off.
[Eb]
So, you know, you can like
[D] whatever.
Alright, [N] so first you gotta get two spoons.
[Fm] I actually have a nice pair of spoons that I got for [Eb] like a dollar at the farmer's market.
[Abm] Um, but, anyway, you just need any kind of spoon, a pair is [Eb] preferable.
Alright, [Ab] grip.
Take your hand, left or right, doesn't matter.
I'm [N] righty so I use my right hand.
And this first knuckle, set of knuckles, you put the spoon in, the first one face the spoon,
you know, down.
So it's facing straight ahead, right?
And you gotta push it like, so it's like sitting right here, that little mat right there.
[Eb] Boom.
Boom.
Now you gotta keep that sucker firm, [E] so it's not flailing around, right?
It's firm, you know, it's not going anywhere.
[N] And you take the other spoon, and place it right on [Eb] top on this, this knuckle.
Boom.
Now [Db] you see the distance, that's a decent [N] distance right there.
These spoons are a little crooked, but, you know, you can kind [Dbm] of bend them to get a
Whatever, you know.
You don't have to be picky with spoons.
[Eb] But, [G] so as you see, you know, something like that is pretty good.
So [N] the percussion sound is going to come from the bowls of the spoons hitting [B] together.
Now as you see, [Ab] I'm not doing this, I'm [E] not doing it with my thumb.
These two, if I don't hit it with my hand or my knee or something, they're not going to make sound.
So the sound source comes [Eb] from, you know.
[N] But, so the grip though is the key.
And it's going to take you a while to get the grip down.
Maybe about, you know, give it like an hour, two hours, it won't take that long.
You know, but at first they're going to be like flailing around, and you're going to be hitting them,
and they're going to get like off like that.
But once you get your grip down, naturally it will get stronger, and you won't lose control [Eb] of it like that, you know.
Alright.
Alright.
Woo, it's hot!
[G] Alright, so [E] there's your grip.
That's the key.
[Eb] That's all you need.
Now the first sound we're going to do is on your knee.
So you got, so say that's your [N] quarter note.
One, two, three, four.
Then you [G] take your hand, and for now, just keep [D] this hand stationary, you know, don't move it around.
And then later on you can start doing this, but for now just keep it there.
So you got like quarter notes.
One, two, three, then you got your eighth note.
[Eb]
Pretty easy.
Alright.
So now I'm doing like eighth notes on my leg.
[Bm] One and two and three and a four and a [Eb] one.
You know, that gives you that like gallop [E] feel.
One and two and three and a four and a one, up, up, up, up, up, [Ab] down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down.
Really easy.
[Abm]
[G] So, you can use that if somebody is doing like a, you
[Eb]
know,
ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
[G]
Now this is basically for dirty hippies, you know, playing at folk [Eb] festivals.
It's great for a, you know, party trick, because nobody knows how to play this.
[Gb] But seriously, it takes an hour.
[G]
Alright, so that's like your shuffle.
[Eb] This alone won't impress people.
And that's what it's all about, you know.
[G] Showing off.
Showing off your gospel spoon tricks.
[N] Speaking of, I want to see some nasty gospel spoon licks.
Gospel [Bm] spoon dot com.
[Eb]
So yeah, this is your shuffle.
Down, down, up, down, down, up, down.
[Bm] Alright, here's the kicker.
This is the secret trick.
[D] Alright, my hand.
You're taking your other hand.
Now see, my fingers right now are [Eb] firm.
You [D] don't want them like loose.
So all you do is keep them nice and firm, just like that.
And watch.
[Bm] [Eb]
[Ab]
See, naturally when you just drag it down, you get
[Bb] So what you do is you [Gb] put that above your knee.
Boom.
[Eb] You're the coolest guy at the party.
Or the biggest nerd.
So
[Bm] that's it.
That's the kick.
You can do some
I don't know.
You [Eb] get that little galaxy thing.
So, uh, [Ab]
yeah.
[G] That's it.
If anybody has any questions, feel free to leave a
