[C] Welcome [Em] to Metalworks Institute Keyboard Tips.
My name is Peter Keter and today what [Eb] we're
going to talk about are some synthesizer tips that are going to add some dynamics and some
depth to your performances.
One of the things I like to use an awful lot when I'm performing
are expression pedals.
What an expression pedal is, is a control voltage pedal.
So what
that does, it looks like a volume pedal but it's not.
It has a cable that comes out of
it that goes into your keyboard.
Your keyboard interprets that data and can send it to different
destinations.
So on a practical level what that means is I've got a piano [F] string layer
set up right now and I've got this pedal set to control the volume of only the strings
but not the piano.
If I was using a real analog volume pedal I would not be able to do this.
Check this out.
I've got piano but then with my foot I can layer in the strings.

So by
doing simple things like this it allows you to sound almost [E] like two different people
are playing keyboards at the same time.
I'm going to give you another example right now.
A lot of times I might have to play piano and organ at the same time from the same keyboard.
I might do this during a gospel tune or maybe in some country music.
So what I've got is
I've got another layer of piano and this time with ham and organ and [Eb] my sliders work as
drawbars and this, the modulation lever controls only the Leslie effect, the spinning speaker
effect on just the organ.
It doesn't do anything to the piano.
So by using all these controllers
and playing with the volume dynamics of the organ in real time it can almost sound like
there's two keyboard players playing at once.
Check it out.

[C] Cool, huh?
I'm going to give
you one more example.
What I've got now is again another layer.
I've got piano this time
with a synth pad but I'm going to use another feature of this keyboard and something that's
found on quite a few keyboards these days.
It's called Aftertouch.
Now, Aftertouch is
pretty cool.
It's another control option and I'll just demonstrate it a little bit right
now.
So here's the pad sound.
[Bb]
[Eb] Okay?
Now, what Aftertouch lets you do is it lets you lean
in harder on the keys that have already been played and you can assign that, it generates
data and you can assign that to some parameter.
In this case I've got it assigned to filter
cutoff so the sound gets brighter.
Check it out.
Right?
So, not only am I using the volume
pedal to control, sorry, the expression pedal to control volume, [Ab]
[Eb] but I can do things with
Aftertouch to kind of just give it a little bit of a swell.
[F]
[Eb]
[D]
I encourage you to check out
all of the controller options that you have available in your synthesizers and use these
tools to add dynamics and expression to your performances.
