Hi and welcome to my tutorial on how to play
the E minor pentatonic scale on bass guitar
The guitar is tuned standard E
[A] A D [D] G
[G] [E]
First let's talk about the pentatonic scale
and what it means.
Penta means five
Tonic means root note or the main note in the scale
so when we play pentatonic we're going to play
the tonic note which is E and then we're gonna move up the neck
to E again and we're going to play five notes
[G] 1, 2, 3
4, [D] 5 and then we're back [E] at the tonic
so pentatonic five notes
before you see the tonic again.
Those notes are
E open, G [G] third fret
E string, open [A] A string
second fret [B] A string, open D [D] string
and then second fret back to E.
[E]
[D] [E] Now a tune modeled after the pentatonic scale
is Slide by Slave from the seventies
and it goes something like this.
[G] [E] [G]
[E] [G]
[E] You [G] can hear the minor pentatonic scale in that song
[E]
now the relative major to the E minor pentatonic scale
is G major pentatonic which is played this way
we're going to play the G [G] first instead of playing the E
so the emphasis is put on the major note of the scale which is G
G third fret, open A
[A] B second [B] fret, [D] open D
E second fret [E] on the D string
and then G [G] open.
So it goes like this
[Bm] [G] that's G major pentatonic.
A good song example
for the G major pentatonic scale is My Girl by The Temptations
[A]
[G] [E] now let's learn the E minor pentatonic scale
moving up the neck like this.
[D]
[Em]
A very useful scale
we're going to start low E, go to [G] G
third fret, [A] A fifth fret
B [B]
seventh fret, D
on the A string fifth [D] fret, E
[E] seventh fret, next to the D string
fifth fret [G] for a G
A [A] seventh fret, B [B]
ninth fret
to the G string seventh fret [D] for a D
[E] E ninth fret and then we can top it off with a high G at the [G] 12th fret
and then go back to that E [E] note
at the ninth fret.
[B]
Now there's a cool scale
that you can use to improve your bass playing skills.

thanks for stopping by and have a great day
