Hey guys, it's Karl Brown from Guitar Lessons 365 .com.
Today we're going to have a nice quick lesson on how to play The Joker by the Steve Miller Band.
First things first, I'm tuned down a whole step.
That is how they're tuned on the album.
So to play that cool little groovy bass line and make it sound right, you've got to have
your guitar tuned down a whole step.
So grab your acoustic and [N] tune everything down a whole step and let's get to work.
We're going to jump here to the third fret.
I apologize, there's [F] going to be some buzz in here.
This guitar is obviously not set up for this kind of a low tuning.
[Gb] We have the third fret twice on the low E string [Am] and then [Bbm] 0, [Am] 2 and then 3 twice on the [Bb] A string.
[Fm] So we have this.
[G] [Bb]
[D] Alright, kind of a muted sound.
A little slight palm muting down here.
And then [C] hammer on to 2 on the D [D] and then the D [Ab] string open [C] twice. [B] All [F] together so far? [A] [Bbm] [C] [G] [Am] Alright, then we're going to go back up [Bb] [C] to the [B] 0, 2 and then the third fret four [Bb] times. Just down up, down up. Then the second fret twice, just down [Am] up. [G] Open A once and the second fret on the low E string [Bb] once. So we have this. [F] [Em] [F] [E] This note kind [F] of leads into the beginning of the riff again. So we have this all together. [G] [Bb] [C] [Bb]
[A] [F] It just [E] starts over. [F] After that second fret, [G] start back [Bb] over. [C] Now [D] the second time through, [G] we have [A] this. [Bb] [F] [Ab] So [G] instead [Bb] [A] [C] of [G] that, you [A] [Bb] still hit that third fret four [C] times and then you're going to do that hammer on [D] to 2 on the D string and then hit [Fm] the down up on [F] the open G. [Dm] [G] So we have [Bb] this. [Dm] Then start the riff [C] over. So we have [F] kind of two times through it and they have different endings. [G] [Bb] [C] [G] [Bb]
[A] [F] [G] [A] [Bb]
[C] [Bb]
[F] [A] Start [Bb] over. [C] [Bb] First [A] ending. [F] [G] Second [Bbm] ending. [C] [Bb] [F]
Alright, now the chords when they start getting to the chorus. It's just a G to [Bb] [C] C. A lot of times when he's playing [Bb] that C chord, they'll [C] have [F] that lick in there [C] again. Just hammering [D] on to 2 [F] and then open G twice. So just listen for that. [Bb] [F] Back to the [Bb] G. Back to C. [F] Back to the G. [Bb] [Dm] Back to C. [C] D. [Bb] C. [F] Start over. [Bb] [F] [Bb]
[F] [Bb]
[C] And then the second time through, just end on the D. Just hold it. Alright, so it's [F] strumming but [Bb] sometimes he's [C] just kind [Bb] [F] of [Bb] [F] [Bb] arpeggiating it. [F] Not straight strumming. So really kind of do what you feel sounds the best. That's pretty much all the song except for the slide guitar parts, you know, the little solos and stuff. So that'll take you through kind of jamming out with some Brent. Alright, I'll see you again soon for Guitar Lessons 365.com. [N]
