How To Play "The Only living boy in New York" (Simon and Garfunkel) by My Cartoon Heart chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everybody, Spencer from My Cartoon Heart here.
I'm going to show you how to play
The Only Living Boy in New York by Paul Simon.
I'm capoed on 5 and before I start I'm going to be speaking as if the only part of the
[A#] guitar we had [N] was above the capo.
So up here is 3rd string 2nd fret, not 3rd string 7th
fret.
It's just going to make it a little easier for both me to teach and you to learn.
So starting [C] chord is going to be a G.
I'm going to go through singing a little bit so
that you can kind of just get a feel for the changes and I'll call them out as I get there.
So, Tom get your plane [F] right on time.
That's G to C.
[C] I know your part [F] will go fine.
G to
C again.
[C]
Fly down to [F] Mexico.
So that's G to C again and now from here you're going to
do a little walk down.
C [E] to C with a B in the [A] bass to an A minor.
Fly down to Mexico
[C] [Dm] and an A [A] minor with a G in the bass.
[C] So I'm using my 4th finger to get [F] that.
[G] To a D.
[F] And here I am.
D to [C] C.
The Only Living Boy [F] in New York.
And that's from [Am] a C to a G back
to a C [F] again.
[C]
And we're on to the second verse.
I get the news I need on the weather [F] report.
It's the same as the one we just played.
G to C.
Gather all the news I need on the weather
[F] report.
G to C again.
[C]
I've got nothing [F] to [C] do [C] today but [G] smile at the [A] funny [F] eyes.
[C] The
Only Living Boy in [F] New York.
[Am] [A]
So up until that part those first two verses are the same.
So just [C] refer when you're playing the second verse to the way I taught in the first one.
So we're just doing [F] C.
G to [C] C.
G to C.
[F] G to C.
[C] Walk down.
B in the [Dm] bass.
A minor.
A minor
[G] with a G in the bass.
D to [F] a C.
[C] Back to a G again.
[F] C.
And then [C] we're back at the second
[C#] verse.
So then after the second verse you [F] notice when I went C [D] walk down to an [A] E.
And
that's that part.
[G] [Dm] Half of the time we call and we don't [C] know where.
We don't [F] know where.
[A] So that's just E.
[Dm] A minor.
[G]
D [C] to a G [F] to a C.
And then [C] we're into that oohing part.
[F] G [C]
to
C.
[C] [F]
G to C again.
[Em] Walk [D] down.
[G]
[F]
[C] [F]
[E] So that part's actually [C#] the exact same as the verse except
you're just singing something different.
You're doing the oohs and the here I am.
Those are
the two parts of the song.
If you're looking for this song you know the structure of it.
So I'm not going to go through and [C] play the whole thing.
The only other thing you need
to learn is the little musical interlude that he does on the guitar [G] which is just in slow
motion.
[G] [C]
[G]
[F] [A]
[C] So all that is G.
And I'm using my first finger.
And I'm playing a G with the
first finger on 5 2's.
[D#] Second finger on 6 3.
Third finger on 1 3.
And all I'm doing
is picking up [G] that first finger and moving it.
[B] Hammering on and pulling off on 5th string
and [G] 4th string.
[C]
And back to the root and then a strum.
[Em] And then on the [G] second time you're
going to do that again but rather than doing the pluck the root and the strum you're going
to hold.
It doesn't matter what finger you do it with.
I use my first.
You're going to
slide up from 3 2 to 3 4 and back down to 3 2.
While you're catching the D in there.
The 4th string.
[D] And then you're going to [G] 1 2 and then you're going to lift off and
you're just going to strike 4 and 3 [Cm] together.
Then to a [F] C.
[A]
And that takes you back into
the E part again.
The second part.
After that there's going to be the [Cm] OO's and I think that
might be the end of the song.
[N] Maybe that's in between the second and third verses or
something.
Those are the only parts of the song.
It's pretty easy.
It's one of Paul Simon's
easier ones.
So anyway have some fun with that.
Hope it was helpful.
You can find any
of my original music [F#m] at MyCartoonHeartMusic.com or MyCartoonHeart1.Bandcamp [N].com. And visit

They're super fun
to learn [N] and they sound really nice and full on just the one acoustic guitar so I encourage
you guys to do so.
Thanks for watching.
See you next time.
