[Eb] [Cm]
Hello [Eb] HD Piano students, my name is Jeff.
[F] Today we're going to be learning The [Eb] Scientist by Coldplay.
We're going to be [Gb] dividing this song into two parts.
Part one is what you're watching right now and you can head on over to HDPiano [Dm].com to
check out part two.
Here's how part one's going to sound.
[Bb] [F]
[C]
[F]
Okay, we're going to divide this part one into [Gb] four measures.
So [Dm] our first measure is this.
Alright, let's do our left hand first.
So we're going to start on a D minor triad.
D, F, A.
[F] And we're hanging out right around middle C here.
Here's our middle [Dm] C.
And in our left hand we're going to play eight eighth [G] notes.
So that's going to sound [Dm] like this.
One and two and three and four and.
In the right hand [F] we're going to be playing this chord which is a D minor seven.
We have our D minor [Dm]
triad, D, F, A, just like the left [F] hand but we're adding a C which is
the seventh of the chord.
We're going to play that as quarter notes.
One, two, three, four.
And then when we put our hands together we're going to have two left hand [Dm] chords for every
one right hand chord.
And nice and slow that's going to sound like this.
One and two and three and four and.
[F] Alright, so I want you to pause, rewind, check that measure out until you get that coordination.
It's not [G] too hard, shouldn't take you too long.
And then meet me right here for measure two which is going to sound like [Bb] this.
Start with the right hand again.
We have a B flat chord.
D, F, B flat.
We're going to play that three times, quarter notes again.
One, two, three.
And for beat four we're going to switch things up again.
We're going to play our B flat chord again and then we're going to [C] play octave C's.
[Bb] So that's going to sound like this.
One, two, three, [C] four and.
Alright, [G] let's talk left hand.
[Bb]
D, F, B flat is our chord, same as the right hand.
We're going to play eight eighth notes again.
One and two and three and four and.
And when we put that together it's going to sound like this.
One and two and three and four and.
Let's try that together a little bit faster.
One, two, three, four and.
So this little [C] change here on beat four doesn't happen every time.
[Bb] As a simplified version you can just play all quarter notes in your right hand like this.
[F] So whatever floats your boat there, whatever you want to do.
You can do the four [Bb] quarter notes, you can do the [F] eighth notes at the end, you can switch it up.
Alright, so that's measure number two, here's measure number three.
Let's do right hand first.
C, F, A.
We're going to do four quarter notes.
One, two, three, four.
That's an F chord.
And left hand, same exact notes, just an octave lower.
C, F, A.
And we'll do eight eighth notes.
One and two and three and four and.
And together.
One and two and three and four and.
That's it, we're on to the fourth measure.
Start with the right hand again.
First chord
[C] is a Csus4, that's a C, F, G.
And then we also have another chord, we have two chords in this measure.
Our second chord is a regular C chord, C, E, G.
So check out the rhythm [F] here, we're going to play the Csus4 three times, [C] and the C just once.
So that's going to be [F] this.
One, two, three, [C] four.
And our left hand is going to use those same two chords, C, [G] F, G for our [C] Csus4, and C, E, G for our C triad.
And we're going to play the Csus4 six times, and the [E] C two times.
And that's going to be like [D] this.
One and two and three and [C] four and.
And when we put that together, same thing as before, for every two chords we play in the left,
we're only going to play one chord in the right.
So nice and slow, that measure is going to be one and two and three and four and.
Let's try that measure one more time.
One and two and three and four and.
Alright, and that's the last measure of part one.
Let's do a little bit of a recap here.
[F]
Measure one, we start with our D minor seven chord.
Measure [Bb] two, we move to a B flat chord, and then we have our
[C] little fill on beat four there.
[F]
Measure three, we have an F chord.
Measure four, we [C] have our Csus4 going to C.
[Em] So it'll really help you if you [Dm] memorize that order of those chords.
[Bb] D minor seven, B [F] flat, [C] F, Csus4 to C.
Let's put all that together at a nice slow rhythm.
[Dm]
One and two and three and four.
[Bb] One and two and three and [F] four and.
One and two, three and four and.
One [C] and two and three and four and.
Alright, great work.
Let's finish up by putting it to the tempo of the recording,
and I'll add a little sustain pedal here too.
[Dm] Three, one, two, three, four.
[Bb] One, two, three, [F] four.
One, two, three, [C] four.
One, two, three, [C] four.
[Dm]
Alright, and that's it.
That's part one of The Scientist by Coldplay.
