How To Play Tipitina chords

Hi guys, Dr.
K here.
Now in the last lesson we looked at Big Chief.
[Eb] [Bbm]
[Eb] Which is a great [G] boogie-woogie kind of piece to learn.
Well, it's not really boogie-woogie, it's kind of New Orleans kind of funk.
[Eb] But of course the other famous Professor Longhair standard,
and it's a song that goes back way into New Orleans musical culture,
is Tipitina.
I think Tipitina
Do you know what Tipitina means in New Orleans slang?
New Orleans slang?
For camera person.
Me?
No idea.
You're looking a bit gormless today.
Well I'm a bit confused by that.
I think, I mean there's lots of American subscribers,
I think Tipitina is Tipitina like your [D] girlfriend in New Orleans.
I think I'm going out with my Tipitina, know what I mean?
Someone called Tina?
No, Tipitina, I think it's like your girlfriend.
I think that's what Tipitina means.
I'm open to corrections here.
I think it means like your girlfriend.
[Db]
And of course Dr.
[N] John does a version of Tipitina,
Professor Longhair does a version of Tipitina,
and I kind of do my own version of Tipitina.
And [Cm] it's the right hand, it's in the key of F,
so you might want to come round.
Well perhaps I should play it first, a little bit of Tipitina.
This [G] is my version.
It [C] starts with the rough.
[F] [Am] [F]
[Bb]
[F] [Am] [C]
[F]
[C] [F] [Am] [F]
[Bb]
[Fm] [C]
[D] [F] That's basically [N] Tipitina, I mean there's several different ways of playing it.
And you might want to come over to the left hand first.
And one of the tricks is the roughs,
which is meant to kind of imitate the snare [C] drum.
Because the snare drum, in New Orleans,
[G]
the piano and the kind of music leans with the [C] snare drum.
So that's just [G] simply that, no big [C] deal.
You can do that three or four times.
So if you
[C] have a right hand, you want to come over to the right hand.
[F]
And then you've got octave.
[Bb]
[F]
[Am] This is very important, you hear that?
That's very New Orleans.
[F]
[C] And that interval is also, [Ab]
[F] [C]
[F]
[Bb]
[F] [C]
[C]
that's quite a [F] nice interval.
[Bb]
[F] [C]
[Cm] And note how the A flat, or the G [Bm] sharp, plays with the one [F] finger.
[C] [Am]
[F] [Bb]
[Fm]
[F]
And with the left hand, I don't really have a [A] left hand.
If you want to come in, I kind of just, there's no real structure [Em] to the left hand.
I mean you might want to [D] just film my left hand so people can see what they're doing.
[Fm] I kind of just [C] improvise the left hand really.
[F] [C] [F]
[Bb] Just kind of [Bb] go up the chord structures really.
[F] [C] [C]
[F] [C]
[F]
[Bb]
[F] [C]
[F]
So that's a little taster of Tipitina.
Again, the point [F] of this video is to give you a little bit of introduction to Tipitina.
There's [N] several different ways of playing it.
Your homework is to go and listen to Dr.
John's version.
And listen to Professor Longhair's version.
And there's several other versions of Tipitina.
Some have [Eb] just piano solos, some with a band.
But it is a New Orleans classic.
So that's all I wanted to share with you today.
