_ _ _ Hey, how's it going?
I'm Robert Rendman from Master Guitar Academy.
Today I'm going to show you how to play Tush by ZZ Top, even though I don't quite have
the beard for it.
Oh well.
This is the classic tune.
Everyone knows it, right?
So the version I'm going to base this on is the _ Crossroads Guitar Festival from 2004.
And you know, one thing that's a bit tricky with this tune is that you have to use your
thumb for the bass note.
And Billy Gibbons, I think he does that quite a bit.
He keeps his guitar strung really low and then uses his thumb for the bass note.
So we're going to do that.
Alright, let's take a look.
_ This is what we do in the beginning.
_ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [C] _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ We [D] play that twice. _
[C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [G] _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ The [Eb] first time without any drums and the second time with the drums.
On the third time we're going to switch to something slightly different and that's where
the vocals start. _
But let's take a closer look.
_ You have to play the bass note [G] with your thumb.
G. _ _ _
Let's do it slowly.
You start with that note G on the low E string and you play it muted twice.
_ _ _ _ [Bb] And then you go up here and I use my pinky with the ring finger on top for extra [G] strength.
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
Back to [G] G.
_ _ _ [C] _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ [Abm] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _
_ [G] And then_ _ _ _ _
That's the rhythm.
_ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ That's one time.
We do it one more [E] time.
[G] _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] And at this point he starts singing.
And then we're going to switch to playing _ [C] only_ _ _
[Bb] _ _ That's [E] it.
And I think he does a bit of a slide in with the thumb.
_ [C] _ _ _
_ [Gb] _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ [C] So you play that same thing four times.
And then we go to the four chord. _ _
C7.
And instead of playing a chord he _
_ [E] plays_
[G] _ _ [A] _ [C] _ _
_ Now we're going to walk back up to [E] G [F] using _ [Gb] _ _ [G] _ _ _
our thumb.
[E] _ One more time.
[C] _ _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [F] _ _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ _ Now we go up to the five chord.
D7.
_ [Ab] And we [D] _ play_
_ _ _ And it's not written in stone exactly how you pick it.
Something like this. _ _
_ _ _ And then [Gm] down to [C] C7.
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
So I finish with just the open D string and the G string.
_ _ _ [D] Which happens right before the turnaround.
Let's do it one more time. _ _ _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ That's a [G] really cool turnaround.
So we have the pinky up here on the note G.
_ _ On the E string.
And then we walk down on the D string. _
[C] _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [D] Okay?
And then we finish _ [G] [Gb] with_ _
_ _ _ So [N] that is _ _ an Eb7 _ [G] _ without _ [Eb] the bass note which would be here. _ _
_ He's not playing that note.
He's just [G] _ playing_
_ _ _ Maybe this_
[F] _
_ [G] _ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ But I don't think he's doing that.
Because when you play this chord using four notes with this much distortion it sounds messy. _
_ _ [G] So I think he's skipping that note and just playing _ three _ _ [Cm] notes.
[G] _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Okay one [N] more time.
From the five [D] chord. _ _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ [Em] _ [Eb] _ _
_ [G] _ [Gb] _ _ _ And [G] then we start over.
_ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ [C] _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [C] _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [F] _ [Gb] _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ [Gb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _

_ [C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ [G] _ _ _
