[F] Hello and welcome [Eb] to HD piano.
This is Dan here and in this lesson [F] we're going to learn
how to play [Eb] Walking in Memphis by Mark Cohn.
[G] We'll learn the intro which kind of serves
as the main riff.
It sounds like this.
[Gm] [C] [Am]
[F] [Gm] [C] [Am] [F]
[Gm] [C] [A]
[Gm] [C] [Am] [G]
[C] [Am] [G]
[C] [Am] [F] [C]
[Am] [F] [C]
[A] [F] [G] [C] [A]
[F] [G] [C] [Fm] Okay.
A lot of repetition here.
We really just have
to learn two measures and we've learned this whole thing.
So let's learn those couple measures.
Now this pattern kind of crosses over hands and what I mean by that is it's all one fluid
line.
It should sound like one fluid line but the parts are crossing between hands with
the pattern being one note in the left hand and the rest in the right.
[Gm] [C] Okay.
[Am] But it should
sound like this.
All right hand.
[Fm] [Gm]
[Fm] Or whatever.
Yeah.
Much easier said than done.
But you
get the point.
It should be one fluid line.
So let's learn the notes.
F, C and F are our
first with F in the left and then C and F in the right.
[Gm] Then G in the left.
D, G, D
in the right.
And those are all [F] equal valued rhythms.
So.
[Gm]
Okay.
We are holding those left
notes but [F] the moment they come in an eighth note follows them immediately after.
[Gm] [C] Okay.
The next note is a C in the left.
G, C, G in the right.
[A] And then the last chord is A
in the left.
E, A, E in the [Am] right.
[F] And that's it.
All right.
Let's go home.
But seriously
that is it.
I mean that's all there is to this whole [Fm] intro slash main riff.
So what
I'd like to do is play it really, really slowly.
And if you can grab onto it with me and we'll
loop it for a while that would be great.
And then we'll slowly pick up the pace and then
I'll show you a couple of the variations that we see throughout.
Okay.
One and two and intro
play.
[Gm] [C]
[Am] [Fm]
[Gm] [C]
[Am] Keep playing.
[Fm]
[Gm] [C]
[A] [F]
[Gm] [C] [A] Couple more times.
[F] [Gm]
[C] [A]
[Fm] [Gm]
[C] [A]
[F] Okay.
At this point if you were able to play any
of that congratulations you're ready to move on.
If you weren't I would recommend you rewind
and practice that slowly.
Because this is one of those riffs, one of those parts that
you really do have to start slow with it.
And you have to build it up.
And then it'll
be really easy.
You'll be like wow I can't believe I thought this was so hard.
It sounds
hard but it actually is easy.
Because eventually you know you can play at this speed.
[Am]
[C] [A] Okay.
[E]
[F] So that is the main riff.
Let's pick up the speed on it.
One and two and ready and play.
[Gm] [C] [Am]
[F] [Gm] [C]
[A] [F] [G]
[C] [A]
[F] [Gm] [C]
[A] Good.
Let's try it closer to studio tempo now.
[Gb] [G] One, two, beginning, go.
[Gm] [C] [A]
[F] [Gm] [C] [Am]
[F] [G] [C] [A]
[F] [Gm] [C] [A]
[F] [Gm] [C] [Am]
[G] [Gm] [C] [Am]
Okay.
At this point in the song, that exact number of times that I just played [F] it, we
take it down an octave.
So now we're down here.
It's the same thing as we played up
here just lower.
Okay.
[G] [C] [Am]
[F] [G] Okay.
[F]
[G] [C] [Am]
[G] [Am] [G] Okay.
And then that [C] eventually gets us to this chord.
C and
G in the left, E and C in the right.
This is the very last statement we make before
the chorus.
Then I'm walking [F] in [G] Memphis.
And that's the chorus which is our next lesson.
Okay.
That wasn't too bad was it?
The main riff.
If any of that was tough, rewind and
practice because I know you can get it.
Now we're going to look at the intro, pardon me,
the outro quick because we see this riff come [C] back.
Let's [F] see.
So we're up here.
[Gm] [C] [Am]
[F] Then we
[G] start to slow [C] down.
[A] And we're down here low.
[F]
Okay.
And actually [C] so here's the riff.
I'm
recalling it now.
[Am] [F] We play F, C and then the A plays [Am] A and [F] then A and C.
Okay.
So we're
down here.
And then [G] the left hand plays G and D.
The right hand chord resolves [D] to G
and B.
The left hand plays [F] a D.
So like this.
[G]
[C] And that's our final chord.
Let's try that
last [F] two measures.
[G] [C]
Okay.
I just thought I'd mention that because you're going to get to
the end and be like, wait, how does this song end?
All right.
[Eb] So good.
We've learned the
main riff here.
We've learned it at a slow tempo and we've [F] learned it at a fast tempo.
So I think you're ready to tackle the [D] next section which is [Eb] the chorus.
Okay.
And this,
like I said, this is [Dm] kind of the main riff that we just learned.
It serves as the verse,
a part [Gm] of the verse.
It serves as that outro that we just learned and the intro that we
just touched on.
[F] So keep that in mind when you're listening to the song.
You're going
to hear this pop up and you're going to be like, that's [Eb] not just the intro.
You're right.
It's kind of a main riff.
It applies to a lot of different [Dm] sections.
All right.
We're

_ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ [A] _ Okay.
[E] _ _
[F] So that is the main riff.
Let's pick up the speed on it.
One and two and ready and play. _
[Gm] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ [F] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ Good.
Let's try it closer to studio tempo now.
[Gb] _ _ [G] _ One, two, beginning, go.
_ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [A] _ _
[F] _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _ _
[F] _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ [A] _ _
[F] _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [A] _ _
[F] _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _ _
[G] _ _ [Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _ _
Okay.
At this point in the song, that exact number of times that I just played [F] it, we
take it down an octave.
So now we're down here.
It's the same thing as we played up
here just lower. _ _
Okay.
[G] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _ _
[F] _ _ [G] _ _ _ Okay.
[F] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _ _ _
[G] _ [Am] _ _ _ [G] Okay.
And then that [C] eventually gets us to this chord.
C and
G in the left, E and C in the right.
This is the very last statement we make before
the chorus.
Then I'm walking [F] in [G] Memphis.
And that's the chorus which is our next lesson.
_ Okay.
That wasn't too bad was it?
The main riff.
If any of that was tough, rewind and
practice because I know you can get it.
Now we're going to look at the intro, pardon me,
the outro quick because we see this riff come [C] back. _ _ _
Let's [F] see.
So we're up here.
[Gm] _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _
_ [F] Then we
[G] start to slow [C] down. _ _
[A] _ _ And we're down here low.
[F] _
_ _ _ _ _ Okay. _
_ And actually [C] so here's the riff.
I'm
recalling it now.
[Am] _ _ _ [F] We play F, C and then the A plays [Am] A and [F] then A and C. _
Okay.
So we're
down here.
And then [G] the left hand plays G and D. _
The right hand chord resolves [D] to G
and B.
The left hand plays [F] a D.
So like this.
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ And that's our final chord.
Let's try that
last [F] two measures.
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ _ Okay.
All right.
