Let's go old-school Coldplay to their first
single, Yellow.
Capo on the second fret.
What we love about Coldplay is
Coldplay songs are very pretty and very easy, and we love easy songs.
So let's get
it started.
Start with an A major chord.
You can play A like this, and you can play A like this.
I'm gonna play A like this.
This is your intro.
Now we're gonna go to [B] A sus 4,
which [B] is really nice because you're only moving one finger [Em] up a fret, your pinky.
Or if you're doing this, you can move your third finger, or you can add your
pinky.
So lots of different ways to play this.
I like to just do that.
One, two,
three, four.
One, two.
A sus 4.
[B] Do that again.
Two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
Now we're
into the groove of the song, A, for two bars.
One, two, three, four.
[F#] E major.
Now we're gonna [E] go to a D sus 2.
If you're not familiar with a D sus 2, it's just your D major shape, but
then take off your middle finger so you get this open string here.
Really nice for two bars.
And that's your [B] verse also.
Oh, don't get mad at me for messing up the [F#] lyrics.
[B] D sus 2.
[E] It was all [B] yellow.
Back to A.
[F#] E major.
[B] D sus 2.
So you do that three times, and then you go back to your A.
A sus 4.

So basically it's two parts.
A, A sus 4, A.
And [F#] then A, [E] E, D sus 2.
That's why we love Coldplay.
Let's go into the chorus.
So now we're gonna play a full D.
Not your D sus 2, but put your middle finger down on the first string, second fret.
Now we're gonna go to an F sharp [G#m] minor, which is a bar chord, which is, it's gonna be a little challenging if you're just new to this instrument.
So there's a couple things we can do.
You can do the full bar chord.
It's taken out of the E minor shape.
You see that?
There's your E minor.
And then you bar.
Or, if you're not ready to do the full bar chord, we can do this little one here where you're just barring these three strings.
But you still have these on the fifth string and the fourth string.
Or, if you're not ready for that, you can do just these three.
Make it even easier.
But one, two, three.
But you have to make sure that you're only getting these three strings when you're strumming.
I'm gonna do the full bar chord, but again, you've got this, [G#m]
this, this, or this to choose from with the F sharp minor.
[B] [E] So D, [G#m] F sharp minor, [F#] E.
[E]
D, [G#m] F sharp [F#] minor, E.
You do that three [E] times.

And the faster you get the bar chords, the easier it'll be in the long run.
Because I tried to skip bar chords for a very, very long time, and it wasn't worth it.
