Travis here from Awkward Pedals and the Chasing Tone Podcast.
[N] Something I've touched base on a little bit before that I want to do again is pedal order.
And I've got to reiterate, there's no wrong way to do it.
Everybody's right.
You know, whatever sounds best to your ear, that's what works.
However, there are some suggestions that I like to make whenever asked.
And one I get a lot is Phasers, Chorus, Univibe.
I kind of lump those all into the same thing.
You know, modulation.
To my ear, a Phaser, Univibe, or Chorus is going to sound best before any kind of dirt.
So I figured I'd just kind of let you hear the difference with it before the dirt and
after the dirt so you can kind of make up your own decision.
So what I've got here is I've got the Depths from Earthquaker Devices, which is a Vibe
unit, and I have the Wampler Plexi Drive.
So I'm going to start with the Depths in front of the Plexi Drive, and I think you'll hear
that it retains that real fat, real warm, real throbby tone to it.
So [Ab] here's my clean [E] tone.
[G] [D] [A] [E]
Now with the Plexi Drive.
[Dm] [A] And [E]
now with the Depths in front of the Plexi Drive.
[D]
[E]
[A] [Bb] [Em]
[Dm] [E] [G]
[D] [A] [E]
[C]
[E] So you can tell it still retains that low end, and really nothing brittle about it at all.
So now I'm just going to swap the pedal order around and let you hear what that sounds like.
Okay, so now all I've done is I've swapped the pedal order.
I've tried my best to keep the exact same settings.
So here's just the Plexi Drive.
[G] [Dm] [E]
Now I'll add the Depths, and I think you'll hear it's not as big, but you know, we'll see.
[G]
[D] [E]
[A] [E]
[A] [G] [C]
So to my ear, I hear that the highs are a little more present, but the bass isn't, and
I also hear that the effect isn't as intense as a whole when after dirt.
That's why I prefer my modulation pedals before dirt.
So hopefully that helped.
You may like it one way or the other, but hopefully that helped.
