HOW TO SING CHRIS CORNELL - AUDIO SLAVE - COCHISE - SHOW ME HOW TO LIVE chords

Hey guys, Ken Tamplin from Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy.
I'm back here at Costa Mesa Studios
with my buddy Nick Feinbarg.
And we're gonna do a takedown today of Audioslave.
Chris Cornell, the songs I've chosen are Cochise
and Show Me How To Live.
I know there's a lot of you out there
that wanna go straight to distorted,
hyper compressed or hyper glottal compression.
Chris has been doing this a long time.
I'm gonna ask you not to do that
because if you do, it's probably gonna hurt yourself.
So we'll talk more about it after,
but let's go ahead and roll tape, Nick.
Cochise and here we go.

Okay, [N] so like I said,
we have a lot of distorted compression.
In fact, I don't even think I distorted myself
as much as he did.
I'd have to sing for a while to do that, but you know,
well I've been, well I've been, well I've been.
If you notice, I'm not going, well I've been.
I'm actually opening up the back of my throat.
I'm really supporting a lot.
Well, I've been watching, yeah, yeah.
Right, so what I'm doing is I'm actually compressing
the chord, I'm cutting back the air, I'm holding my breath,
I'm cutting back the air when I do this.
I'm not letting so much air pass across the chord
that it dries the chord out.
And at the time, I am distressing the chord.
So whoever said, you know, singing should be free
of, you know, stress or whatever, that's baloney.
It's not the absence of stress, it's the management
thereof, especially when you're singing something
like this, maybe an opera and other things we do.
Yes, you can get by without a lot of,
without a lot of stress within, you know,
hitting certain notes and stuff.
But in this kind of singing, we are certainly
stressing out the chord.
♪ Nail in my hand ♪
It's pretty doggone distorted.
So anyway, with that said, in my How to Sing Better
Than Anyone Else series, I walk you through
how to build up to this kind of compression
because if you try to do it too prematurely,
you probably will lose your voice
or it won't last very long.
So anyway, thank you for joining me.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy.
Again, this was Audioslave, Chris Cornell,
Cochise, and Show Me How to Live.
Until next time.
