How to Tune a Melodica - Part 1 chords
Start Jamming...
This is how to tune a melodica.
This melodica has a couple notes that have really bothered me, especially
this
C5 has bothered me for years.
So I finally opened it up.
What I did is I watched the Hohner tuning video for
harmonicas, but this is obviously slightly different.
So I have a pocket knife and
obviously I kept the screws carefully, and then I bought this small metal file.
It's not a curved file,
but it's a chainsaw file.
I went online and got this tuning app.
It's actually Shareware.
Right now it's trying to tune my voice.
What I did is I tuned, I checked the tuning of every note, and I wrote what the deviation was.
Now I didn't actually
figure out, I didn't calibrate it.
I think I'm gonna aim for A443 because melodicas tend to be a little sharp.
So I'm only gonna change the notes that are really badly out of tune.
Here's my C5 and it was
25 cents over, so significantly sharp, which is what I had noticed.
My F5 was also significantly sharp.
So I've already tuned those notes, and now I'll just show you.
So here's the trick.
To tune, first of all you have to be very careful, and you file diagonally.
I'm not gonna tune this one because I already did.
This is my, I believe that's my C.
Yeah, that's my C5.
So what you do is you lift it up a little bit with a pocket knife and
support it.
And to,
this one I actually made a mistake because I started to tune on the end.
The [Ab] end is going to make it,
turn the pitch up.
It's gonna make it sharper, and you're only gonna do a couple strokes, three, four, or five strokes.
I'm sorry, the tip, okay?
And the base of the reed is
where you file if it is sharp and you need to lower it.
So after I had raised it even more,
I had to file at the base.
So then my F,
[Eb] [Bb] you can also check these, which notes it is, are by pulling the key, and then you can see which reed it is.
So,
[Ab] oh,
my F was significantly flat.
It was 23 cents flat.
So I, yeah, so I correctly filed the tip on that one.
So I'm just going to find a few more notes,
and then I'll put this thing together and blow on it, and we'll see.
The other trick that I learned from the Hohner
tuning video
was that you should plink each reed as you tune it, and that'll help it settle in.
So I'm gonna go ahead and tune a few more of these notes, like this E4 is 15
