Hi, I'm Steve Huber at Huber Banjos and today in this video
I'm going to show you how to tune your head to a G sharp.
All right
Here's what you need for tools.
You need a tuner to be in standard tuning.
You need a wrench to adjust your hooks and
I like to use a pencil
Or a drumstick works pretty well.
You can also brush it with your finger if you need to
All right.
So right now this banjo is in tune and the head is under a G sharp
Okay to hear the G sharp note I like to play the first string [Abm] at the sixth fret
That's your G sharp note
[Eb] Some people like to [G] play the fourth [Ab] string at the sixth fret and hear that [Eb] octave difference either [Abm] way
All [Ab] right.
There's your G sharp note.
Now.
I'm going to mute the strings and I'm going to tap the head close to the tension
[F]
In there if you can listen past the tap noise there's a note [D] right [Bb] now
[Bm] It's under the G sharp
Okay, so I'm going to tighten the head and I'm going to come up [N] to that G sharp note
So we want to take the resonator off incidentally, it's it's better to
Have the resonator on when you're tapping you can just hear that note a little better of resonator helps
So we'll take the resonator [E] off
And we'll show you how to tighten the head
[Gb] [N]
All right, these are your adjusting nuts for your hooks and I like just to start here
And I like to go around
Just a little bit.
I'm doing about a
Maybe an eighth of [Eb] a turn or less than that and I'm [Gb] just going to go around the banjo
[Bb]
[C] [Bb]
[Bm] [Cm] All
[Ab] right after I [Gb] do that tighten up
I want to see if I'm in tune because I [G] may be a little sharp because I tighten the head up so it may [D] sharpen
The tuning and I am so I need to come back down to standard tuning
[G]
[Bm]
[D]
[G] Okay, we're in tune
[Gb]
I'm going to put the resonator
Back under it [E]
and I'm going to tap
[Ab] Check it.
[Eb] [Bb] [Ab]
So that's
Very very close to a G sharp
So that's how [D] you get your get your head to the G sharp
The G [C] sharp is a great place to start if you're not sure where you want your head
Lot of professional players over the last [G] well from the beginning
[Fm] When they started [Gb] with the plastic heads a
G [Ab] sharp is a great place.
[N] You might prefer it a little under you might prefer it a little higher
But it's a great place to start.
So that's how you do it.
Thanks for watching
