This film is called Totem and Taboo?
Totem and Taboo, yeah.
Why?
Well, it's taken from a book by Sigmund Freud,
which was, he was a psychoanalyst,
and it's a great idea,
that there are things that we revere and we have respect for,
and there are other things that we cannot talk about,
that are subjects, that are too dangerous,
and I think that the danger there is not to discuss things,
it's that you run the risk that people will misunderstand things
and they don't get the right
I think that everything should be discussed.
That's one of the problems with the world now,
is we have so many forms of communication now,
but people discuss things less than they ever did before.
I mean, even, you know, everyone speaks with emails and this,
and texting, but they are always misinterpreted.
The best way to communicate is through talking,
and even then you can be misinterpreted.
So it's all about communication, this record, Totem and Taboo,
and I've looked at different things in the songs
and tried to discuss them with myself, you know.
The subject of beauty,
different points of view about things.
The beauty, what do you express there with yourself?
Well, I mean, there's one song called Love Me Slender,
which I'm playing, it's a take from Love Me Tender,
Love Me Slender, and it's just looking at the history of beauty.
You know, it's like a hundred years ago,
it was, you are beautiful if you were fat.
[Ab] A woman was beautiful if she was fat,
because it meant that she had money, enough money to get fat,
therefore she was beautiful.
And what is this?
I don't understand, this is a very crazy way of looking at beauty.
You know, so Botticelli, Rubens, these painters,
and then Picasso would paint, you know,
an
[N] abstract painting of a beautiful woman,
and it would look like something else, you know.
So the subject of beauty is very interesting, I think.
It's also something to do with the way you look at yourself?
Yeah, it all helps, you know,
when you question the way you think about things,
then you are questioning yourself.
And there's nothing wrong with that.
You should always try and question your beliefs.
Is there another song, maybe God's Guns and Gaze?
Well, God's Guns and Gaze is about looking at America, you know,
because the three subjects, I mean, America is obsessed with religion,
and violence, and freedom of speech.
And so it's a look at that, and where America is going,
you know, what will happen to it in the future.
What do you think will happen?
I have no idea.
But these are the revered, these are the totems in America, you know,
religion, violence, and freedom of speech.
So that's, you know, it's a very loose,
the Totem and Taboo is a loose subject, but I'm trying to, you know, I'm trying.
Then there's another song, Bad Vibration?
Bad Vibrations, that's, yeah, that's a loose connection there.
Yeah, it's about attitudes of some women,
personal experience, you know.
People who suck energy from you, you know,
they don't have to be women, they could be men too.
If you are sensitive to people's, the way people's, to people's vibrations,
you can tell if people are taking energy from you or giving you energy.
And it's the people that are taking energy from you that you should try and avoid.
And then what, last song, A Street Called Carol, is it a real street?
Yeah, there is a street in Los Angeles called Carol Street,
and I was taken there one day, and I just thought,
because it has a woman's name, Carol,
I just thought it would be a great subject for a song.
But that's a loose connection.
Well, it's just quite romantic, A Street Called Carol, you know.
And the person who took me there, that's how they described it.
There's a girl I know there, and she said,
this is A Street Called Carol, and I said,
that's a great title for a song, rather than saying Carol Street.
So it's about, it's the story of how I went to the street,
and it's the street where they filmed the Michael Jackson thriller video.
And it's on a hill above Los Angeles, overlooks it,
and it's very un-Los Angeles-like, the houses on the street.
Very wooden, sort of San Francisco-type houses.
Very unusual place.
