This next song has a really interesting history.
It's an older song of mine.
Not that that's unusual these days, but you know, I had a rude awakening as a musician about, you know, when I was, oh, I guess
several years ago, I really, what I really wanted was an old Martin guitar.
This has [Bb] nothing to do with the song, by the way.
But it was just one of the things.
I [Em] actually had one early on and through circumstances I [D] didn't have it anymore.
I just wanted a really [Bm] old, rich Martin guitar.
[A] Realized that, you know, I wasn't going to just,
[B] no one was just [Ab] going to give it to me and I couldn't [N] really afford the guitar I wanted, so I gave up.
I bought this really nice guitar that was three or four years old.
And just gave up that dream and then, you know, a couple of years ago I pulled it out from under the bed and it was an old Martin.
[G] [B]
That's not [Fm] what I meant.
[Eb]
[Bb] So this song, I think, was written before I got that old Martin.
[F] But it's been around a bit.
It's never been the hit or anything, but a lot of people have sung it.
And then a few years ago I got an email from a friend of mine with Grounded [Em] Records who [Gb] had heard this
and told me that Johnny Cash [D] had learned this song and was, and the obvious implication was that he was going to record it.
Well, I was [Bm] pretty excited [Bb] about that and three days [Bb] later I woke up and turned the radio on and Johnny Cash had died.
[D]
I [Ab] just hoped it hadn't been my song.
[D]
But, so [A] that's actually, unfortunately, a rather typical [E] music business story.
The part that's not typical is that a year and a [G] half later [D] this song turned up on the album that he had recorded just [Bb] before he died.
And nobody [N] knew that, not that I knew of, not my publisher, not anybody.
[Dm] Now that's what [E] makes the story.

When sorrow holds [Bb] you in her arms
And [C] it's raindrops that fall from [F] your eyes
Your smile's like the sun come [Bb] to earth for a day
[F] You brighten my blackened [C]
stuffed skies
[F]
You are the rose of [Bb] my heart
[C] You are the love of [F] my life
