[G] I think every album is going to have its lessons.
What's it like when something you've been working on for so long is finally out there, out of your hands?
It's a strange feeling, it's sort of coming out and being out in the open.
It's like having a kid and you let it run free.
Yeah, it's definitely a strange feeling.
It's an exciting one for one.
It can feel like a big battle has just commenced and everyone's been shot and now you're just waiting until [G] more ammunition comes in.
So the next battle begins?
Yeah.
Has the next battle already begun?
I've started writing the second record, which I'm really excited about.
[A] This tour has so far been amazing, we've had a brilliant time.
[Em] We've been on our best behaviour.
It's all good.
What are the new songs like?
[A] I see that the first record is more of a learning process rather than a baby record.
I will learn a lot from it and I think I already have, in the way that the songs are put together and the way that the songs sound.
[G]
I'm really excited about them.
So now you're working on your actual debut then?
I think every album is going to have its lessons to be taught.
It's just like growing up, I guess.
It's going to be a long journey of music.
Are you the kind of person who worries about what other people think of what you are making?
No, not really.
I'm not really worried about that.
I'm proud of the record and I think that's all I need.
If I'm happy with it then anyone else's judgement is on it.
I like certain music that other people don't and I don't like [C] certain music that other people don't.
It's just how the world works.
But I'm happy with it.
Who is the most critical person in your little [G] circle?
Probably me.
I criticise myself to beat other people to the punch.
But I trust people who know a lot about music, who don't just say, oh yeah, it's brilliant.
So yeah, I sort of [A] understand judgement.
Since you're so self-critical, can you already look back on what you've done now [E] and pinpoint [G] some things that are not that good?
Definitely.
I think anyone can do that with anything that they've done.
There's always going to be things that you could have gone back to to change.
But if you end up doing that then you'll get nothing done.
I think that's one of the things that I learnt, just to let it be as it is.
Can you already say something about Deconstant?
Deconstant?
In retrospect.
What can I say about it?
I feel like the new kid at school and I'm bringing my first piece of homework to the headmaster to have a look at.
So far it's been really [C] good.
If this is your first piece of homework, then what were all these songs you already played over the last couple of years?
Because I saw you two years ago already playing in Amsterdam at Paradiso.
Oh yeah, for London Calling Festival.
You're still young, but [G] you were even younger then.
What were those songs for you?
Those were drafts of songs.
I really liked them then and then I look back at them now and I don't really like to listen to them.
It's like something that you've done when you're really young.
And yeah, it's sort of embarrassing.
But you know, I'm a bit older now and I've got a whole body of work [C] put together and I'm really happy about that.
And apart from yourself, who is most important when it comes to giving you advice on your musical career?
Probably, I don't know actually.
I don't really have anyone that I turn to.
You don't have a jury who you come up to with [G] your songs?
No, I don't do that.
Songs stay in my head for a while until I let people listen to them.
[C#] Because I criticise them first before anyone else can.
