Hey guys, I'm here to cover John Mayer's live version of I Don't Need No Doctor.
Alright, first off he does a little intro riff.
He says yeah, it would have been really cool with the band falling in.
Here's the intro riff, I'm going to play it really slow for you at first, see if you can
figure out the fingering for it.
[E]
[B] You saw that, he does pretty much the same thing that he does in the main riff, and there's
only a few differences.
He starts off the same, and then he changes right here.
He does a bend on the second fret, [A] [G] and pulls off, [Em] hits the second fret on the fourth string,
then hammers on first fret on the third string, [E] hits the E string open, and then hits the
second fret fourth string.
[Em]
[E] So [N] that's that intro.
Alright, next I'm going to go over the main riff.
This is still the intro, but he does it just a little bit different from the normal.
First off, you'll hear in the background the bass notes, and it's not the bass guitar,
it's [Em] actually John Mayer.
You'll hear
[G]
[N] And I'll show you how to work that into it.
Here's the first part of the intro, really slow.
[Em] [G]
[A] [D] [Em]
[G]
[E]
Alright, pick that apart.
First thing you're going to do is normal riff.
Start out, open E, hammer on [G#] third string first fret, [E] E open, pull off third [Bm] fret second
string, [B] and then you're going to [G] hit, to get that second bass note on the right timing,
you're going to hit the third string open, and hammer on right after on the third [D] fret
of your E string.
So you're going [Em] to go
and hit it real quick.
That'll give you the right timing for the bass notes.
The next part,
[G] you're going to hit four and three on your third and second string, [D] hit
your D open, then [C] two and two on your third [A] and second string.
And then I like [E] to, it's kind of like an E major chord that comes next, so I like to
hit the second fret on fourth string, and then hammer on [Em] your first fret G string.
[Dm] So all together [Em]
[G] that's
that's
[Em] the first part of the intro.
And then after that he repeats the same thing, except he'll hit something else instead of
doing your little hammer on.
[G]
[C#] Go up to the twelfth fret on your fourth string, eleventh fret on your third [D] string, hit them
both, then hit your [E] E open, and then [A#] your third string again.
[Em]
[G] So [D]
[E] that's that part.
And that's almost done with the intro, there's only one other thing you're going to need
to know in the intro.
He changes [Em] one more time in the last riff of the intro.
[G] [E]
Kind of like that.
What he does is the same thing up until [Em] one point.
And [G]
[F#m] then here, instead [E] of going
you're [G] going to go
pull off [E] it and then hit second
fret on your fourth string.
That's the whole intro.
[Em] Alright guys, here's that whole intro.
[E] [Em]
[G]
[Bm]
[Bm]
[Em] [G]
[A] [Em] [G]
[Bm] [Em] [G]
[E]
Alright guys, there's only a few more parts to teach.
These next few parts are a lot simpler.
He'll go on to another little riff he has.
You're going to have your fifth string, fourth fret, your [Dm] third string, fourth fret, and
your second string, [B] fifth fret.
And you're going [C#m] to
So you're going to hit
hold on
And [B] then slide your ones on the fourth fret up, [D]
[Am] slide down, [C] take off your third string,
slide down, leave it open, and have your second string third fret and fifth string third fret.
[G]
And then you're [G] going
this is a weird fingering.
It's his major chord that he likes [A] to use a lot.
[G] And he's going to, instead of
he's going to add the pinky in on the fifth fret.
And then you're going to add your [A] thumb on the fifth fret.
[B] And then slide up a fret, two frets.
[C#m] [C]
[A]
[B]
Another little small part that you'll find in the song.
He'll start up here.
It's the same fingerings as that major chord.
[A]
[G] [A]
That's just a really simple one.
You can play that slow if you want to figure it out.
Alright guys, I figured I'd play this solo for you.
You can play it back as many times as you want.
Try and figure out the fingerings.
[Em] [G]
[A] [E] [G]
[B] [Em]
[G]
[B] [Em]
[A] [Em]
[D]
[B] [Em]
[E]
[B]
[G]
[B]
[Em]
Alright guys, that's all the time I've got for you.
I hope you all get
