My name is Imogen Heap.
Hello.
And I'm the composer of this project.
I've been asked
to make a piece of music that is going to make babies happy, _ _ _ which is very appealing
to me because I make music and I have a [Ab] baby. _
[Cm] _ _ [Bb] _ [Eb] I think if you Google laughing babies and science, my name pops up quite often.
I seem
to be cornering the market in the psychology of happy babies.
So I'm a professor in the [Ab] psychology department here [Bb] at Goldsmiths [Eb] University.
And [Cm] my specific
[Bb] [Eb] expertise and [Abm] interests are [Cm] around how the [Bb] brain [Eb] processes music.
C&G Baby Hub came and said we want to create a song that makes babies happy and we want
to use [Ab] science in that process.
The great thing about this is it's [Eb] sort of something
just so obvious and yet nobody's thought to do it.
To look at music that [Bb] makes babies
really happy, [Eb] that's quite an exciting thing for me.
_ _ She was going through a stage where she'd literally dance [Bb] as soon as any [Eb] kind of music,
even the doorbell went.
She seems to really like music.

actually started dancing to this the other day and I was like, oh, do you like [Db] that?
So then I was like trying to look for music that was that sort of [Abm] beat.
[Eb] And then, no,
it didn't interest her.
_ _ _ _ We'll be listening to these sounds that have been contributed [Ab] by the parents with a [Cm] view
to why they might be grabbing [Eb] attention and causing such delight. _
[Ab] These are some sounds [Eb] that people have sent in that [Bb] they think babies like.

_ _ Do you [Eb] like that sound?
My [Bb] first mission [Eb] is to make four pieces of [Ab] music beginning with these ideas [Cm] and then
build upon them.

[Abm] _ it's the labcaster speaking.
I'm [Eb] _ hoping she laughs a lot.
I think it's quite good because then it helps me to understand
what my baby likes, you know.
The first day was quite a steep learning curve.
Are we pressing all the right buttons?
Are
we recording all of the different things we need to record?
Bizarrely, the most exciting bit for me is actually the data.
It's seeing how the heart
rate changes.
You know, I can definitely confidently say from a scientific point of view, something's happened here. _
Now, we know that _ sounds that are plosives, that have got sort of like pop, _ these sounds
are likely to be most engaging.
I like [Ab] the sort of the [Eb] binging and the beep [Cm] beep is really [Eb] good because of these [Bb] plosive [Eb] _ sounds.
Yeah.
Whenever you're testing babies, there is always going to be a lot of variation.
That's
what we account for.
If on top of all of that, you still get a clear preference, that's a
very strong result.
I just can't believe that this test has never happened before, that there's never been an
experiment done with a musician to discover what makes babies happier. _ _ _ _ _
