30 years ago today
_ [Ab] Richard and myself were doing a rehearsal [Am] for don't leave me this way on a TV show
And I received a [G] telephone call to tell me that my best friend Mark Ashton had died
[Ab] _
Mark had died from an AIDS related [G] illness pneumonia [F] and
_ _ We [Cm] done the rehearsal [Bm] and it made the [A] song all that more special.
It gave the [Bb] song such a powerful meaning for me
[Ab] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [Eb] and _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ I was [Eb] also
_ _ [Cm] heartbroken _ _ _ _
[B] It was [C] 1987
_ _ [A] We were going [Bb] through this period
_ [A] when _
gay men were dying from a gay plague [Eb] and
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _
[Bb] There was so much discrimination
[Cm] _ There was so much awful [Am] stuff going on from the media _
terrible terrible time for so many people and _
_ [Bb] I lost a lot of people [A] that I never [Bb] saw again didn't know what happened to them until much later
[Ab] _
And discovered they had [A] died from AIDS related illnesses and
_ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
Yeah, it was [Bb] a hard time to be a gay man _
_ [C] But the one thing I'm proud [A] of at that period is that Richard and I
_ _ [C] We stood up _
_ _ [Bb] And we were counted _
[B] and we stood up for all of [Bb] those who couldn't stand up for [C] themselves and _ _ _ _ _
We gave a voice [Ab] to
_ [C] _ We give a [Bb] human voice a human face to what [A] was happening
[Cm] _ When [Ab] everyone else who could have and I believe should have
[F] _
[G] Kept quiet, [Bb] _ but that's history
[Cm] _
So we move on [C] and also I found this postcard in my box of stuff
And it's a postcard [Bb] I bought when I went to United States, _ [Bm] _
and it was the inaugural
_ [C] _ showing of
The [Ab] AIDS Memorial quilt in Washington, [B] and it's a very [A] beautiful thing and a powerful [Ab] thing [B] all of this
[Bb] These are all quilts all sewn [A] together and they all commemorate _
People who [Ab] had died from AIDS it was dedications [Am] from people who loved them _ [C] and this is such [Ab] a powerful thing
