[G] Well the last record, Hurtsville, [F] we went to Yass [Eb] down [F] in southern New South Wales and
it was kind of just a logical point [E] between Sydney and where we had to pick up [F] the gear
to [A] record, which was down on the border of Victoria.
[G] I [Gm] kind of wanted to get a small place but the best place we could get [F] was a castle.
[Ab] Basically [F] it was kind of a castle because it had a central atrium and wings coming off that.
It was an [Gm] imitation of [A] a Scottish [Eb] castle [C] that the immigrants had [Eb] built when they came down [E] here.
[F]
[G] [Ab] We [G] recorded mainly [Fm] in the massive atrium [E] [A] and [C] [Fm]
[Gb] that [F] influenced the sound because we were
recording [E] things at [Eb] great distance [A] and with lots of different [Eb] microphones everywhere and
picking up [F] whole guitars would have six [Ebm] mics on each thing [E] and the drums, like kick drums,
we had weird room [Eb] mics at the top of the stairwell and it was [G] chaos.
[D]
It was fun but [G] I think for this record we just wanted to focus on very close sounds
and [F] we recorded it at Kim's house [E]
and [A] wasn't so focused on getting [E] lost in the technicality
[F] of sound as such and we were [Ab] just focused on [Eb] making a concise arrangement.
[Dm] [C]
[D] [Gm]
[Bb]
[Gb] Hurtsville was very [C] widescreen and [G] like a [D] surging massive [F] sound whereas this was very
controlled [Eb] and focused [G] and everything was like Tetris-y.
[D]
[A]
I guess it was something I was going towards in Hurtsville.
We were making predominantly [F] guitar music but then in the end we [A] had to
[F] lay a synth
under it to help it stand [Gbm] up and then with this [A] one we [F] started at that end and then [A] added
guitars afterwards because [F] we figured [Eb] out the construction of [A] things is
You [Bb] don't want [Ab] to get to [F] a mix [A] and [G] you've got like the [F] rhythm section [Eb] doesn't work or
something [A] and then you spend all your time trying to push that [Gbm] together whereas [F] this
was [E] [F] just like building a [A] house.
[Eb] You can build it in a very clumsy back to [F] front way and it's an interesting [Am] house to
[Eb] look at but [F] it's kind of hard to live in [E] because it's very [Gbm]
liveable.
[A]
I love [E] soul music and I love folk music but if there's ever [A] a thing I want to do it's
just [Eb] copy that.
It's [A] always sort of twisted and a bit deconstructed or coming at it from [C] a modern [A] angle.
I'm not into making retro [Am] music.
I don't [G] think that the 80s is [B] a thing that I'm going for.
[Eb]
I think that the [Gb] new record is really [G] modern and we're trying to make something [Gb] that sounds
like it was made now.
[E] We're using instruments [Fm] from now and [F]
[Gb] trying to make something new.
[Bb]
Humanly effects, [F]
magnesium
You have a back catalogue [C] of [Gb] things in your head and when you write [Gbm] certain things come
out in a certain [Bb] way and then you edit it and [Gb]
put [Ab] it to music and [G]
I find repetition
in music draws things out that you don't [Bb] really ever think about [Gb] that much.
It's like [F] getting into this meditative [Gb] state.
[F] You hit with an [Gb] idea and then you write it down [G] and [Gb] eventually it comes out later down the line.
[G] Any time I've thought [F] to write about [E] something in particular it's always a waste of time.
[Bb]
We'll go there [F] and we'll do shows and [Gb]
hopefully people [F] will be delighted by our shows [Gb] and
they'll want to go to more [Bb] shows and then we'll [Gb] slowly work our way [F] up the mid
[Gb]-level
[F] band system [Bb] and [F] play Madison Square Garden or something.
