[N] A long time ago I did a lesson called Insane Voodoo Child Lick or Insane Voodoo Child Riff
and there were some parts of that that I got a little bit wrong and some sharp-eared viewers
have been pointing that out recently, which is kind of odd considering how long ago I
did that lesson, but be that as it may, I want to make sure that I teach it correctly
so I'm going to redo that lesson today, and this time try and correct the mistakes I made last time.
So the lick that we're talking about is I think the second lick that Stevie does in
the solo when he's covering this song Couldn't Stand the Weather, and it [Ab] starts with a bend
on the G string at the 12th fret, then continue up to the B [Bbm] string, then to the E string on
the [Ebm] 12th fret, all one picking [Eb] motion, [Db] and then I think there he either does a backwards
rake [Eb] or plays both those strings.
Either way, it's very quickly after that that he goes right into this bend at the 15th fret.
[Gb] [Eb] Alright, so let's take a look at the picking angle for that.
[Gb] [Eb] So played at full speed it would go like this.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Ab] So I'm doing a little backwards [Eb] pick on that second, [Abm] and I'm bending [Eb] right into that bend there.
Now, he holds this bend for a little while [N] there, and he takes his time bending up.
You don't want to go all the way up right away, because then he does two more bends
right after he holds that [Gb] bend for a while.
[G] [Eb]
And that second bend is what leads us into the next part of the lick, which is
[Ebm] [Ab] Now, last time I taught it this [Eb] way, but there's no actual bend there because [Ab] when you're playing
it at full speed it's too fast to put that bend in, so there's only a bend on the second time.
[Bb] [Abm] So again, the notes are, after you [Ab] get down from this bend, out of the 12th fret on the
E string [Eb] with a little hammer-on, down to the 15th fret on the B [Db] string, no bend,
[Bbm] then followed by this little circular [Ab] from [F] the 12th on the E to the 15th on the B to the 12th on the B.
[Bbm] Then [N] followed by a bend on the B string of the 15th [Abm] fret.
Now I'm going to play it at full speed, and then I'm going to use the slow motion feature of the software
to take a look at that in slow [Eb] motion.
[Ab] [D]
[Eb]
[Bb] [B] [Cm]
Alright, now let's take it to the next part of the lick, which is
[Eb] [Eb] [Ab]
So we're going to do this little [Bb] circular lick down from the 12th on the E, the 15th on the B,
down to the 12th on the B again.
Right back up [C] again with the same bend as we did at the [Eb] beginning.
And [Ab] back down, [Bbm] [Eb] followed by this lick on the G and the D string.
[Ab]
Followed by some wicked vibrato on the G string.
So the second part of this lick again [Bb]
[Abm] goes
So when you put it [Ab] all together, it sounds [Ebm] [B] like
[Gb] [Eb] And the only thing that you do at the end, after you get to the vibrato [Ab] here,
[Eb] you hit the low E string open, [B] followed by the root [Eb] note from the 14th fret on the D string.
Actually, it's a little [Ab] hammer-on from the 12th fret.
[Eb] [Bb] So when you put it all together, it goes like this.
[E] [Eb]
[Ebm] [Eb]
[D]
[Eb]
[Gb] [Eb]
[D]
[Ab] Now let's take a look at the picking for the second part.
[Ab]
[Eb]
[G]
[Ab]
[Gbm]
[Eb]
So anyway, that's the lick.
This time, hopefully, a little bit more correct than it was last time.
I hope you enjoyed.
Until next time, thanks for watching.
