Start Jamming...
Okay, I have to do this one.
Another request, somebody asked for it.
My son came home from school and he said,
Dad, I [E] met with a counselor today and she says I have [Em] ADD.
And I said, well, what's that?
He said, it's called attention deficit disorder, Dad.
And I think you have it worse than I do.
So I got [E] diagnosed by my son.
I read all the literature.
I realized, sure enough, through my life
I had managed it, probably with different forms of pathology,
but one specifically I remember was
obsessive compulsive disorder, which has morphed,
as I've gotten older, [B] into [E] attention surplus syndrome,
which of course [Am] is ASS.
[Eb] [A] And I try to [E] hide that side.
I got this, I put together this song just from [A] odds and ends.
[D] Songwriting [Em] is such a [E] weird thing.
It [Em] [E] starts out as this free association
and just when it all [B] comes together,
it's just, [G] it's sort of a miracle
and you almost don't even feel like
you had anything to do with it.
You're just a bystander.
[D] And [A] this was not one of those.
I just labored over this thing for a year
[E]
and abused some of my fans who came to my shows
and I played it before it was done.
[Em] Anyway, it was a musical posted to myself,
not to believe everything I think.
And somebody has asked for this tonight.
[E] You are a sick person.
[Em]
[B]
[Em] Where day can turn into certain disaster.
When you're the servant and your mind is the [A] master.
You become the director of a tragic play
[Em] where none of the actors [E] see it your way.
[B] Stuck in your head with this arrogant [Em] snob,
you'd think he would have thought himself out of a [E] job
because he's petty, stingy, [Em] paranoid.
You'd fire the jerk, but you're self [A]-employed.
So when you've had about all of [Em] yourself,
you can take you plan this kind of prison break
[B] and you get yourself busy figuring something out.
And you [Em] get out of your head and you begin to shout.
[A] Help me, I am trapped.
[E] On the inside of my face.
[A] I woke up from a nap.
[E] Brain stem all over the place.
[A] Down boy, sit, [B] roll over, stay.
[E] Anybody know any psycho [A] feng shui?
As I [D] am trapped [B] to the inside [A] of my [Em] face.
[A]
[B] [E] So with your brain stuck in the on [Em] position,
you drag yourself to a mental physician.
[A] He shakes his head at your furtive stare.
He says, never be [Em] alone when you go in there.
[B]
Anything you say will be misunderstood
[Em] because your mind is like a bad neighborhood.
Maybe [E] it's from back there in your [Em] psychoactive years.
[E] You might have stripped some really [A] important gear.
It's dark in there and it's dangerous [Em] too
from doing what all the little voices
have been telling you [B] to do.
I think it's damaged way beyond [E] fixing
[Em] because some parts are broken, some are [A] missing.
Help me, I am trapped.
On the [E] inside of my face.
[A] I woke up something snapped.
[E] Now the real me is being erased.
[A] [B] They're launching a frontal attack.
[Em] Somebody help me get [A] the real me back.
I am trapped [B] to the inside.
[Em]
[A] [E]
[Bm] [E] So it turns [Em] out the reality is just a collective hunch.
Points of view gathered in a bunch.
People [A] with opinions believing one another.
[Em] Brain against brain, [E] brother against brother.
[B] We're all chips off the same mainframe.
That [Em] part is hard to find though
when you're [E] thinking with that brain
because no amount of thinking will find the [Em] place.
When the brain stems in [A] control of the face,
all the little voices drive you to the [Abm] brink
of [Em] leaving absolutely everything that you think.
[B] Your true whereabouts remains unknown.
[Em]
The lights are [G] running.
[A] Everybody's help me, I am trapped.
[E] Now the inside of my face.
[A] I woke up kidnapped.
[E]
This imposter taking my place.
[A]
[B] Be afraid, be [Em] very afraid.
[A] Reptilian ganglions are overrun at the inside [Em] of my mind.
[A]
Out of my mind, [Em] leave a message.
[E]
[D] [G] [N]
