We asked Bill Champlin if he feels free from his days [G] with Chicago.
I'm John Bowden from
Rock [F#] History Music.
[Em] He has a brand new project that's coming up called Bill Champlin and Wonder [G] Ground.
The album is called Bleeding Secrets and we're going to have a [D] smidgen, a sample for you
[A] coming up at the end of [Em] this video and in the description of this video we can get a sound or [G] a
sample of the new album with the song's [D] imaginary friend and Only Way Down.
[A] We've got Bill on the
line.
Mr.
[C] Bill Champlin, you've always been known as probably one of the most blunt [D] real interviews
[A] in music.
[C] Uh-oh, well [A] that's gotten me into more trouble than it's done anything else.
[C] You've been
out of the band Chicago for a little while now.
Is there a sense of freedom not being [Bm] with such
a big band?
Yeah, I kind of am.
Yeah, I [A] do numerous projects.
I mean I play with Danny [D] Seraphine and
in that situation [G] there's a lot more Chicago tunes that we do.
I've never had a problem with the
tunes.
I just kind of was starting [E] to have problems with how they were being played and presented [G] and
I thought that there was some problems there [E] at least for you know what [Em] wasn't for me it just
wasn't coming from where [D] it was when they were originally writing it.
I mean when you [A] go, hey
man let's get back to what we [C] used to be and you just copy yourself [A] that on how you played that day
that's [E] not the same thing as finding the energy that it [Gm] came from that day.
That's what you
don't want to copy yourself over and over.
It's the same as copying somebody else after a while.
[Em] Bleeding Secrets is the name of your new album, Bill Champlin and Wonderground.
Tell me about this [G] whole project.
We're [Gm] calling it Bill Champlin [D] and Wonderground.
W-U-N-D-E-R-G-R-O-U-N-D.
It's like underground with a [Gm] W in front, right?
And it's a project we've been working on actually
with me and Tamara and a real close friend of mine Gary [D] Falcone who I've known for years as a singer
[A] around town.
Really good breeder and great singer.
Really [C] cool high tenor voice.
Great singer all the
[E] way around.
I didn't realize he was a [A] guitar player too so he came [C] over the house one day.
I ran into
him.
Hadn't seen him in years.
He [E] came over the house.
[A] We wrote something together and he played
me some stuff on [C] guitar and I went, oh Jesus this guy can blow.
[B] And suddenly we started writing you
know.
He said, [A] well help me write this one song for this album.
So we wrote a [D] song with him.
It
was cool.
[E] Very cool tune.
And [A] you know he said, man that one's great.
I went in and I actually
produced the track on it.
He went, whoa that's something different.
That's really working.
And then so then he said, well let's write this other one.
I got another one.
You want to help
me with that?
Next thing you know we had an album worth of material.
That's part one of a five-part
series with Bill Champlin.
He spent a lot of years with Chicago but he's been out of that for a
little while doing his [G] own thing.
And as mentioned his brand new project is called Bill Champlin and
Wonderground.
The album's called Bleeding Secrets.
You can pre-order it at BillChamplin.com. There'll
