Hi, this is Mickey and I'm in Lush.
And I'm Emma, also in Lush.
And you're watching Ambie.
[F#]
Hey everyone, it's Alicia from Ambie and I would like to welcome you to our interview with Lush.
Hello!
Hi.
Hello.
How are you both doing?
Okay.
Okay?
A little [C#] bit tired?
Yeah.
Been on the road for five days!
Probably.
I just wanted to say welcome to Toronto and to Turf.
Thank you.
Just kind of walk me through your last 24 hours and what you've been up to.
We stayed the night in Mississauga, which is like a neighbouring city.
Yes.
Is it?
Is it?
Okay.
[C#] I don't think we were even in the heart of it, were we?
Oh no, no, no.
We were on the outskirts of Mississauga.
Okay.
It's quite a nice hotel.
We found a great Indian restaurant.
Yeah, yeah.
[B] Really good Indian.
I think that's actually [C#] what's widened me out today.
I feel like I need about two days to recover from a meal like that.
Went for a swim, jacuzzi.
No, it was a dale.
You probably guessed that.
You have to take those in while you're out, don't you?
Yeah, yeah.
Exactly, yeah.
[A#m] Well, this is the first time you're [C#] playing shows in decades in some cities.
So how have these shows been going over so far, the North American [F#] ones?
Great.
Really, really good actually, yeah.
[D#] Yeah, we were in New York.
So we did two in New York and then we did one [C#] in Boston on this little tour, on this part of the tour.
[A] They were great, weren't they?
[F#] Really good crowd.
And [F#] we, yeah, in April we were West Coast.
Like many fans, I'm extremely excited about this Lush reunion.
What was it like getting back in the studio together and kind of just driving off everything
and putting together the Blind Spot EP?
That was really good.
The EP, yeah, we kind of recorded it in a very different way than we [E] used to back in the day.
It was [F#] obviously now with computers, you can share files.
A lot of it was actually done before we actually went in the [C#] proper studio and did the instruments.
It went really well though, yeah.
And we didn't have much time.
Yeah, [G] there was that too.
But that helped.
Yeah, it was quite crammed in.
[F#] And it was freaking me out a bit because I hadn't done any vocals on a proper record for 20 years.
Longer actually.
So I was a bit worried about how that would go.
But it actually went really well.
It was fun as well.
[C#] It was nice and cool.
Kind of like riding a bicycle [F#] again and then it just all came back to you?
Yeah, a little bit.
It wasn't too much to try [C#] and dig down deep into memories of how to do everything.
It all kind of did come back quite.
It [C#] was actually even more natural because I think before we would have rehearsed.
We hadn't even played at that point.
We hadn't played as a band.
We hadn't rehearsed.
We hadn't done adjusting, nothing.
So going into that studio was like the first time in 20 years.
There was no real preamble to it.
So I was a bit worried.
But actually it went really well.
So maybe it is a bit like riding a bike.
Good producers as well.
Yeah, that's how it went.
One thing that I find very cool is it's actually been 30 years since you created the original band name which was Baby Machine.
So what are your thoughts on that name now that you're kind of looking back on it?
What do you think about the first lush band name?
It came from a Suzy in the Bunch.
It was Arabian Nights.
And we never actually played a gig called Baby Machines.
It was just when we were thinking about being in a band.
You got the name first.
It was quite a good name.
I think it's quite a good name.
That sort of feminist slant.
It probably would have been a good Riot Grrrl band name.
Lush probably was a better bet.
[C#m] Happy we settled on that one.
One thing I was doing a [F#] couple of weeks back.
I was looking at when you played Top of the Pops.
And I just loved the look.
You guys looked so badass when you performed [C#] that show.
Really.
When you look back on either older interviews or [F#] performances, what's running through your mind on the [C#] fashion?
Is there anything where you're like, oh I wish I didn't wear that or oh I love that?
A [Cm] lot of what I used to wear in [C#] the 90s.
What am I wearing?
Those big wedgie shoes and hoods.
But it was the 90s.
I've really learned to interview.
I have had people send me links.
And I start watching it and I think, oh god, shut up.
It's too cringy.
I mean the EP was released a little bit ago.
Kind of once you had just reunited.
What's next music wise after this big tour?
Is there anything?
Any plans?
It's like we have to do this first.
We haven't even had a proper conversation about it.
There's this sort of will.
But it's logistically making it happen is the tricky part.
Because everyone's got kids and jobs and commitments.
This [F#] has been quite hard to get this together.
Just [C#] time wise.
First we have to have a conversation about it.
Then we'll see.
Good night's sleep.
We'll all wait and see.
To wrap things up today, is there anything you want to say to all the [F#] Lush fans who will be viewing the interview?
Hello!
You both made the exact [C#] same expression.
I just want to say thank you so much for chatting today.
It means a lot.
No problem.
Thank you.
It is my pleasure.
