[Dbm] Hey, what's up you guys?
Marty Schwartz here, [N] GuitarJams.com.
Gonna bring you a tasty riff today with a couple other little boop-bop.
Also I come from GuitarJams.com and I've got some lessons that are not on YouTube that
will help you progress as well as a chord and scale book.
You can actually put your info down in that link down there and I'll send you some really
cool stuff like that.
I really appreciate it.
But let's do a nice free lesson right now.
We're gonna zoom in, show you some cool stuff and let's get to it.
Here we go.
Alright, so here we go.
Got the 8th fret right there, [C] which is a C note.
If I play a bar chord right here, [E] that shape [C] right there [Fm] looks like an E chord.
The root's right there on the E [Ab] string, E shape, 8th fret, [C] full bar chord,
[E] 1, 2, 3.
And the thing to think about is [Fm] if I keep [C] the pressure down, it [E] rings out, right?
But that's not the riff [N] we're going for.
We're going for a term that could be called staccato.
You know, it cuts off.
So you [Ab] do that by just relaxing your chord [C] hand.
So we don't want, we want.
[N] [C]
[E] The next thing is the bass is [N] actually playing, [C]
[Fm] so it's kind of like a, [Eb] you know, it's an
E flat [Bm] to a [C] D to a C.
[F] And that bass line underneath really helps thicken up [Eb] this little, [Cm] [Ebm] which is kind of like
a [E] funk thing.
And that was a cool thing about [N] the band In Excess is that they, you know, it was like
a late 80s band, but they used elements of funk and dance music and rock.
And I just, I really liked that band a lot.
[E] So here's our next little move.
We're going to take [N] our index finger and bar that 8th fret.
And I think what we really want, [Ebm] we don't really want the G string in there.
[Cm] It can be.
[E] [Cm] [Em]
[E] I am barring it, [Ab] but I'm kind of, when I'm aiming for [N] my strum, I'm kind of aiming for
the B and the high E only.
And my [B] index finger covering the G is kind of [Fm] muting it a little bit.
It's just, it's okay if it gets in there, but it's not [B] really, we don't really [E] want
that too strongly in [A] there.
And we need to get [Am] [Ab] some loosey-goosiness here.
[N] And for whatever reason, this is just my personal [Em] playing, is when [Ab] I'm doing more chika-chika-chika [Gb]-chika
kind of [G] stuff, I tend to actually [N] double up with my fingers and I kind of get this loose
kind of like [Ab] paintbrush
[E] kind of vibe.
But typically [G] it's only when I'm going [F] into the fast, strummy stuff, [Em] whereas when I'm
playing single notes, [Fm] I'm holding it like that, or I'm picking, I'm holding it like that.
But when it gets [N] to heavy strumming, for whatever reason, I never analyze it until I start making
these videos, I hold it like that.
So we've [C] got,
[A]
[Ab] and so we're starting with, we're holding this little [Fm] cluster here, [N] and
we've got the 11th fret on the high E with the [Eb] pinky, then ring [F] finger, [Ab]
half step lower
[B] to the [Eb] 10th fret,
[C] and [Cm] then these two.
Like I said, the G is kind of getting muted in there a bit.
[C]
[Eb] [Ab]
[C]
[A] [C]
[Eb] [Cm] [Eb]
[C] [Eb]
[Ab] [C] [Bb] [C] [F]
[C] [B]
[F] [C] And so that's a C note,
[Bb] [C] [Ebm] and then right next door is [F] F.
[C] [Bb] [C]
[F] [Eb] [F] [Bb] And there's this [Fm] great palm-muting,
funky little pocket, little piece of guitar playing.
[C] [D]
[E]
[C] [D]
[C] [D] [C] [Bb]
[C] [F] [E]
[Eb] [D]
[Em] Listen to what happens if I don't palm mute with my [D] right hand.
[Em] [N] Now I literally can feel like the little vibrations under my palm right there, just kind of tickling
my palm there a little bit.
[C]
So [Am] [C] if I start with nothing, and I bring my, you can see, my wrist right here, I'm bringing
it from here in, like [B] this, as I pluck, [G] until I feel that bottom of my [N] palm just getting
the string vibrating underneath it just [C] enough where we still hear the note.
[Ab]
[D] [E] [D]
[B] [D]
[C] And that's a really [F] good technique to work on.
I'm going to go practice it after I [B] turn this video off.
[C]
Five, [G] five, seven, and eight.
[E] So five, seven, and [D] eights.
[Ab] Five, [D] five, [Eb] seven, eight.
[D] [Eb] [Bb]
[Fm] [Eb] [D]
[C]
[Bm] [Abm] [D] [C] [D] [Ebm] [D]
