Start Jamming...
OK, I'll have to play a little tune, actually quite a substantial tune for you this time.
It's a reel called the Buckle of Oran Mor, and it's a classic, it's one of the most popular Irish reels.
It's actually got, let's see, one, two, three, four, five parts, so it's unusual in the sense that it's got more parts than most,
which only have two, and each part is played twice in the usual way.
But it's a really rousing reel, often played pretty fast, and often played at the end of the night, you know, to get the climax of the gig kind of thing.
I'm going to play it in a more relaxed kind of fashion, and we'll see you at the end.

[Gb]
[B] [Am]
[Ab]
[N] OK, so it's quite a demanding tune in the sense that there's a lot of notes to remember, a lot of parts to learn.
And the trickiest bit is actually the last part.
I'm using a Suzuki Promaster MR350V half-valved harp, and it's in Patti Richter tuning.
And that's in the key of D, by the way, and the tune's in D, and the harp's in D.
[Abm] But the Patti Richter tuning [Db] allows you to play [D] all that stuff down the bottom end, which you just wouldn't be able to do on a normal harp, the first [Gb] part.
[Am]
[Ab] [Am] So that's all down the bottom.
And that's two-fourths.
[Gb]
[Ab]
[Am] [Ab]
Here's that note [Eb] that's the Patti Richter note, if you like.
It's a three-blow upper tone.
So you can play all that sort of gutsy stuff down the bottom end on the Patti Richter.
[Gb] As I say, the fifth part is the trickiest, because [N] you don't have that A in three-blow anymore.
You're going from an A to a D, so you've got to jump from your two [Abm]-draw to your full-blow.
So I [E]
[Ab] [D]
[E] [Gb]
[A]
[Ab] [G] [Gb] think that's the trickiest bit about it.
I'm doing quite [Ab] a few tongue triplets and [E] stuff.
[Fm] [N] That's basically all that stuff.
And a few jaw flicks.
[B]
[G] [Ab]
[Ab]
[G] [N] So basically those things are little decorations in the tune.
They're very personal.
People do different kinds, and they do them in different places, but those are the ones that just popped out when I did the tune.
If you want to learn in more detail how to do all these decorations and play the tune, you can check out my book, Play Irish Music on the Blues Harp, which describes all these decorations and how to do them.
So, the Bucks of Oranmore.
[Ab] I'll try playing it a bit faster now, just to finish off.
