_ [G] It came [F#m] upon a midnight [A] clear.
Beautiful chorus, _ [D] very comforting.
It's that 6-8 kind of [A] almost lullaby quality to it.
But originally written by a pastor, Edmund Sears from Massachusetts _ in [D] 1849.
So [Bm] _ _ [E] again, fascinating to just think these [A] pastors, these hymn writers, _ very much like
pastors and songwriters [D] do currently.
[E] Get in the word.
[A] And actually a lot of _ [C#] _ it came from, there was a lot of war [F#m] going on in Europe, and the
United States and Mexico [B] were at war.
_ And so if you read sort of [E] the background on the song, he was kind of influenced by
[A] some of the strife, some of the hard times that really the world was going through.
[D] So not [E] only based on the [A] Christmas story, but if you read some of the other stanzas,
you [C#] can see there's some _ parallels of what was going on in history at that time, and
sort of his [C#m]
response in [D] song.
But of [E] course, the verse we know best is, _ it came upon a midnight clear, that glorious
song of old, [D] from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold.
_ Peace [D#] on earth, goodwill to [D] men.
I [E] guess again, that was, [A] it says it was just kind of, of course, that's what the angels,
how it's [E] described in the New Testament and the [C#m] Gospels.
However, it's interesting to know that background, that he [E] was kind of going through a [F#m] melancholy
period as he wrote this, and was troubled and just so praying for [D] and interceding for
peace on earth.
_ [E] _ Of course, [E] we could do that _ nowadays [D] with strife that's in the world.
[A] So peace on earth, goodwill to [G] men, from heaven's [D] all gracious King, [A] _ the world in
solemn stillness lay, _ to hear the angels sing.
As I was kind of worshipping with the song this past year and _ feeling like, okay, we
didn't put this on our [E] first Christmas record CD, [A] cassette, _ _ _ I just thought I definitely
want to include this.
It's such _ _ [D] an [E] important _ [A] Christmas carol.
Again, I just felt [C#] like, what do we say?
What was the, [F#m] to hear the angels _ [B] sing?
And I thought, what would be a good [E] chorus that's like, sends us [A] _ vertical, that gets
us like singing [C#m] to the Lord?
And [C#m] _
just [D] in taking some time to worship [E] with it.
_ _ [A] The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels [D] sing. _ _
_ _ _ Glorious, my eyes have seen the [E] glory _ [D] of the Lord.
[E] _
Again, imagining the [A] angels, imagining the wise men, the kings that had traveled from afar.
_ [D] They were like, oh my _ _ gosh, here he is, this is Messiah, this is [E] _
_ [D] glorious.
_ [F#] I just think it really [A] matches well.
Glorious, he stands above the rulers of the earth.
But they recognize [E] that this was the king of kings, even as an infant.
[C#m] These kings, these [F#]
probably [F#m] proud _ _ wise men, we call them, but they were really kings and
leaders [Bm] of certain nations that were, [E] the Bible doesn't really say exactly where they
were from, [A] but it's quite interesting that they would humble themselves to the point
of like, we want to go meet this [F#m] leader, this king, this king of kings.
[D] _ [A] And so we go on to sing the second verse.
Again, it's just worth slowly reading through this.
_ [F#m] It's worth taking out your hand and just reading [E] through these words, and I won't [D] do it here
[A] in this interview.
But _ again, [E] I do feel like glorious was a good [F#m] match. _ _ _
_ [Em] You are [A] glorious, just sounds [D] like the kind of thing that the angels would sing.
To hear the angels sing, glorious.
_ _ [E]
You stand [D] above the rulers [F#] of the earth, [A] _ glorious, _ _ glorious, Lord, you are [D] _ _ glorious. _
_ You know, so it's been working, been working [E] for me, at least in my home church.
So _ [E] I hope it [A] will serve the church well, and I hope that it really _ reinforces [E] the song
that the angels were singing. _
[C#m] The glorious king, I find it interesting [E] _
_ [F#m] that they actually use that word here.
It came upon a midnight [D] clear, that glorious _ [E] song of old.
Get it?
[A] Wink, wink.
No, but seriously, it's a glorious song.
Glorious. _
So, [F#m] hallelujah. _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _
_ _ [A] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _
_ _ [A] _ _ _ _
