[C#] [E] Hello singers and welcome back to [B] melamusiclessons.com, I'm Meli and in [D#] this episode we're going to
talk about riffs and runs.
All about it, how to be better at it, how to have more flexible muscles, which is what
is really all about.
So first of all we're going to start by defining what is a vocal riff.
Vocal riff basically refers to a repeated melodic idea and some singers use it as a
stylistic choice in their songs or artistic choice as well.
And then a run refers to basically just a run of notes within the melody of the song.
So usually they go together to offer a more expressive and emotional way of singing.
So we're going to start by doing a few vocal exercises that are going to help you a lot
in this super cool [A] riff and run exercise.
So the first one is going to be TA-RA.
T-A-R-A.
TA-RA.
So the idea is to get your muscles loosened up a little bit and just make sure that you
relax your throat because it's very important [F#] when you are doing these vocal exercises to
be as relaxed as possible like I said in other videos.
So this next vocal exercise is TA-RA.
Like TA-RA.
[A] Basically we're going [C#] to start by doing
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA. [A] Okay?
It's very important to maintain all the muscles and all [D#] of your throat and mainly your mouth [A] relaxed.
Okay.
So here we go.
TA-RA-RA-RA [C#]-RA-RA-RA-RA.
[A#] TA [C]-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [A#]-RA.
Good.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [B]-RA.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [C]-RA.
TA [D]-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
[C] One more time.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
[C#] Mhm.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
One more time.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
Good.
So the higher we get the more relaxed we want that to be.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
You can see, you can [D#] put your hand here and it'll be much easier.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
There we go.
[D] TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
One more time.
TA [F]-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [E]-RA-RA.
[F#] TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [F]-RA.
[G] TA-RA-RA [F#]-RA-RA-RA-RA [F]-RA.
[G] TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA. [E] Good.
A few more.
[F#] TA-RA-RA-RA [G#]-RA-RA-RA-RA [D#]-RA.
TA [F]-RA-RA-RA [D]-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA.
TA-RA-RA-RA-RA [C#]-RA-RA-RA-RA.
[D#] TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [C]-RA-RA.
[D] TA-RA-RA-RA-RA-RA [F#]-RA-RA.
All right.
Cool.
So if you repeat these a few more times, then it's going to be great and you're going
to be doing some amazing vocal exercises and just some cool riffs and runs in no time.
So the second part to this exercise is O.
[A] So we're going to do
O [B]-O-O-O-O [A]-O-O-O-O.
Okay?
So this part and this part, so you guys know what I'm doing, I'm basically doing [C#] 1-2-3 [E]-3-4-5-5-4-3 [A]-3-2-1-1.
I'm doing that order so you can follow it and you're going to see it over here in the screen.
1-2-3-3-4-5 [C#]-5-4-3-3 [A]-2-1-1.
And then I'm just substituting it for the O.
So
O [B]-O-O-O-O-O [A]-O-O-O.
Good.
For this exercise, we don't really need a lot of breath.
It's just a tiny bit of a breath.
So like, something like that.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [A#]
[B]
-O.
Start that again.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O.
Good.
And keep that sense of happiness, because smiling is very good for our placement.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [C]-O.
O [D]-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [C#]-O.
O [D#]-O-O-O-O-O-O [C#]-O-O.
So remember.
1-2-3-3-4-5-5-4-3-3-2-1-1.
Right?
O-O [D#]-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [D]-O.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [D#]-O.
O-O-O-O-O [F]-O-O-O-O.
Good.
And now we're gonna try to do it a [D#] tiny bit faster,
so it actually sounds [F#] like you're riffing a run. Right?
So, [C] let's start over here.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O.
One more time.
O-O-O-O-O-O [C#]-O-O-O.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O [D]-O.
O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O.
The idea of this one is to keep your mouth as relaxed as possible,
and I know I say it a lot, but it's so important.
So you're doing great.
We're gonna continue a little bit more.
I know you can do it.
O-O [D]
-O-O [E]-O-O [D#]-O-O-O.
[F] O-O-O
[E]-O-O [F#]-O [F]
-O [G]-O-O.
[F#] O-O-O -O-O-O-O-O.
O-O-O-O -O-O-O-O.
Let's try that again.
[A] O-O-O-O [A#]-O-O-O-O.
Okay, so there you have it.
We're gonna keep doing these riffs and runs every day if possible.
Remember to start with the ta-da, and then we go with the O-O-O-O.
And that will help you a lot to develop flexibility in your muscles, in your larynx muscles.
So little by little, you'll be able to do all the things that you want to do with the songs that you love.
So I'll see you soon.
[B] [G#m] [N]
