Iva Davies Interview - Today Extra, 19 May 2017 chords
Start Jamming...
The year was 1982 [B] and the [C#] song blaring from every [C#m] Australian radio was a single by the name of Great
Southern Land the tune became an unofficial Aussie anthem and
Catapulted Icehouse into worldwide stardom.
Well this year marks the band's 40th anniversary
And so we had to get Ivor Davies to come back [E] into the studio and talk all about it, buddy.
Happy 40th
Thank you very much Thank [G] you
When you first formed the band Sony was saying [B] she loved the fact you guys started the Worrywood Surf [Em] Club
Mm-hmm up here in the northern [B] beaches you were 22
[E] What 1977 how was that first night?
[A] Remember [B] it's that must have been good
Yeah, but if the [C#m] thing is I think at the time we're having a great time
It's just a great hobby because I honestly have to say it took a long time to convince me
That there was a proper job at all.
Really?
Oh, yeah
Yeah, but you have been so busy, you know smashing out shows around Australia and New Zealand since [B] January you said you've played for
240,000 people still yeah clocking it up 240,000 so far so far
[F] You finish up in April, but you've had an overwhelming response and you've added some extra shows [E] through June exactly, right?
So we've got shows at the star in the Gold [B] Coast shows in Perth at the Crown Theatre and [Em] shows and more and more
Theaters in Sydney.
So if you're looking to come in Sydney, yes, [F#m] we sold out too earlier this year, but it's been [C#] quite a demand
Yeah, and you know you guys headline so many shows [F#] you toured so many great acts you talked with Bowie in 83
I know that he was a big influence on you and your [C#m] songwriting really wasn't he?
Well and a lot of other [G] people too, obviously
Yeah, and it was an incredible opportunity because of course [C] he'd finally cracked North America
Which [G] he had hadn't done previous that so we knew it was going to be huge and it was huge
We were playing to [D] 70,000 people every [G] show Wow
[B] And of course the whole [G] machine that was around David Bowie at that point was just this
[B] monumental juggernaut and it was actually quite scary because for example
We [D#] we we went out to a little bar in Rotterdam one night and I don't know [C#] how the word got out
But within minutes the place was so full.
It was actually dangerous
We actually had to get passed out over the crowd to get out of there
Yeah, [A#] so it's but it was so fast [B] that was the thing about what was he like when you were touring with him
Well, look I think it's been time
I think it was just a [F] period where he probably couldn't really let his guard down too much because there was just so much going
And that was pre the days of social media, too.
So how the word got around?
I really it was quite mystifying
I remember staying in the same hotel as him and the whole people camped in the lobby for days on end
I don't know how security let them in but there were [G] literally this kind of sea of people who were just sleeping in the
And it was your song.
Hey little girl that got you [A] invited on that tour with both that with Boeing that year
But is it [Am] true that you wrote that song?
[Dm] Sort of slightly under duress because the record company said there wasn't a hit on the current
[Am] I got to the end of the whole album recording and they said we don't have a single and the co-producer happened to be house mining
Giorgio Moroder, you know the famous disco [F] producer.
He had a big mansion [Dm] up and over the Hollywood Hills
and he said come up and stay a [Em] couple of nights because he's got a full studio in the house and
I wrote hey little girl in Giorgio Moroder's [E] house
How long did [Em] it take to write that song?
Oh look it was quite a few hours
It was [G] interesting
All of my instruments were down in in Westlake Studios in Hollywood
So I had to use what was lying around so I [B] had a bass guitar with three strings and a [Em] guitar with five instead of six
strings Wow, just all these kind of
Yeah, [Bm] hey, let's talk about what's your favorite [B] song?
Sonia I really am struggling to choose.
I have a couple maybe you're so strange was one
I love right kid.
[Em] You know, I love no promises.
Yep.
We can get together.
We can get together
Yeah, [B] I'm gonna go with that one.
It's hard to choose though.
It really is what electric blue?
I mean, there's just so many great hits.
What is your [E] favorite song at this year?
Cuz you know, I know that as an artist it sort of changes around a bit
But when you're touring the moment you go, you know, this is the one I've really I found again
I mean, [G] well, I know you're a fan of don't believe anymore
[G#] And it's probably the most honest song I ever wrote because it really well, that's [F] exactly how I was feeling at the time
So it was a yeah, there have been moments.
I should really struggle to sing it live because it's actually real
And yeah, my word.
[B] Yeah, what was the song about when you wrote it?
[G#] Oh my relationship
which
Was [E] much more messy than I [G] actually realized it was right
This is an incredible box set because we've got spread out here.
We've got a lot of favorites [B] out here
but [D] 40 years of ice house
So some of this have live stuff on it as well.
So live at the time you can go
