[D] A few years ago I was asked by a musician named Danger Mouse if I wouldn't mind finishing a couple songs for a project he was working on.
He had [N] a pretty interesting idea.
He was going to write the music and then have it transcribed into sheet music.
And then he was going to fly it to Rome and he was going to have all the musicians who are now in their 80s
that played on all of Ennio Morricone's soundtracks for Sergio Leone films to record the music.
It was a really beautiful idea so he came back with a lot of beautiful instrumentals, none of which had [A] any vocals on them or lyrics to them.
And he asked if I would write a couple of [Db] lyrics to some of these songs and I said sure.
And I started thinking, yeah, okay, why not?
And he sent them over but I started to play them and I realized I've never done this in my life before.
I've never written lyrics and vocals for somebody else's song.
I have no idea how to [N] do this.
So I quit my job and got right to it.
That was a hook.
I came [E]
[Db] [Bb] up with a method.
I [N] started listening to it driving around Nashville.
I played all the songs in the car, about 10 or 12 of them.
And I kept listening to them as I drove around town.
And I had a handheld recorder with me and I just sang whatever came to my mind as I drove for hours and hours around.
For days I did this.
I just drove for hours and recorded anything that popped into my head to sing along with these songs.
I found it very, very difficult to write lyrics and vocals for a song that I haven't written myself.
But finally I got to something that started to make sense.
And eventually, if you let that, I guess, you let God inside the room or inside the car.
In that case, he does it for you, does all the work for you and you have nothing to do with it anymore.
And this is one of those [Dm] songs that we came up with.
It's called The Rose with the Broken Neck.
