_ _ Hi everybody, it's a great pleasure to be with you tonight to celebrate the leadership
and the incredible work of Roger Brown at Berklee School of Music. _
_ I have never had the musical chops or the _ understanding of theory to attend Berklee
myself but I've had the good fortune to work with many people who have, _ _ _ both in the engineering
field and in terms of their musicianship.
As a matter of fact, the guy that runs my studio is somebody that I wrote a letter to
Berklee to get admitted to Berklee _ long ago.
Now he runs my studio and he runs Rick Rubin's studio.
_ _ _ I think he went from Berklee to a job at Kinko's for a while to prepare him ultimately for
life in the music business. _ _ _
But yeah, I just want to congratulate you Roger on your incredible stewardship of all
these young minds, young musicians [C] and essential work going forward in training them and preparing
them for a life in music.
_ _ _ _ I'm going to give you this song of mine, The Pretender. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] I'm going to rent myself a house in the shade [Bb] of a sweet wind. _ _ _
_ [F] Going to pack my lunch in the morning _ and go [C] to work each [Bb] day.
[C] When [F] the evening rolls [Bb] around, _
[F] I'll go home and lay my [Bb] body down.
[C] When [F] the morning light comes [C] streaming in, I'll get up [Bb] and do it again.
_ [C] _ [F] Amen, _ [Bb] _ _ [F] _ amen. _ _
[C] I [F] want to know what became of the changes we waited [Bb] for love to bring. _ _
Were [F] they only the fitful dreams of some greater [C] _ awakening?
[Bb] I've _
[F] been aware of the time going [Bb] by. _
[F] They say in the end it's the wink of an [Bb] eye. _
[F] When the morning light comes [C] streaming in, you'll get up [Gm] and do it again.
_ _ [F] _ _
Yeah.
[Bb] _ _ _ [Gm] _ [F] _
Caught between [C] the longing for love and the struggle for the legal [A] tender.
_ _ _ _ [D] _
[Am] Where [Bb] the sirens sing and the church bells ring [E] and [Dm] the checkman pounds his fender. _
[C] Where [Bb] the veterans dream [F] of the fight, fast [A] asleep at the traffic [D] light. _
And [G] the children _ solemnly [F] wait for the [G] ice [C] cream vendor.
[Em] _ _ [Dm] _ [C] _
Out into [Bb] the cool of the evening [C] _
strolls the [Dm] pretender.

I'm [F] going to find myself a girl who can show me [Bb] what laughter means.
[F] _ _
And we'll fill in the missing colors in each [C] other's paint by number [Bb] dreams. _
[F] And then we'll put our dark glasses [Bb] on _
[C] and we'll [F] make love until our [Bb] strength is gone.
And when [F] the morning light comes [C] streaming in, we'll get [Gm] up and do it again.
_ _ [F] _
Get it up [Bb] again.
_ _ [Gm] _ [F] _
I'm going to be [C] a happy idiot that struggles for the legal [A] tender.

[C] And [Bb] believe in whatever [F] made them lie in those [A] things that money can [Dm] buy.
_ [G] True _ _ love could have them a [C] contender.
_ [Em] _ _ [Dm] _ [C] _
[Bb] Are you there?
