Start Jamming...
Hey everybody, Bob with Acoustic Songs and I'm going to show you how I play the opening to You Can Close Your Eyes by James Taylor.
The chords for the song are all [Gb] over the internet so that's not a problem to get, but the [Bb] opening is a little bit confusing.
[G] So anyway, I'm going to show [A] you how I do it.
It may not be 100% [G] correct, but it [Bb] sounds pretty good and I don't think anyone's really going to notice a difference.
But I think the song needs a certain way to start.
So anyway, I'm going to go ahead and play it a couple times and then I'll come back and show you how I do [D] it.
[A]
[D] [G] [Em]
[D] The sun is [G] surely [D] sinking [E] down.
[D]
[G] [A] [A]
[G] [Em]
[E]
[A]
[A] [G]
[E]
Alright, so [Ab] you want to start off in D [D] chord.
And that's [G] just the [Bb] first string.
You're [G] playing it open and then kind of [Gb] hammering down the second [D] fret.
[Gm] Into a G chord with the third fret of the [Gb] second string down [G] as well.
[D]
So instead of a [Eb] normal G, you're going to also [Gb] have your ring finger down on the third fret of the second [D] string.
[G] [D]
[Gm] [D] [Gm]
[D] [G] Into [Bb] an A.
[A] I'm going to play my A [Ab] with two fingers like I [Bb] always do.
[A]
And that is [G] your pinky down on the third fret of the second string.
[D]
[A]
And then letting it up.
[D]
[G]
[D]
[A]
[D]
[E] [A]
Okay, so that's the first part of the opening.
The next [Bb] is pretty much the same [D] start.
[G]
And [A] then you're going to [Eb] walk down your low E string one [Bb] fret to the second fret.
[D]
[Gb]
[D] [G]
[D] [Gm] Into an [Bb] [B] E minor [Bb] 7.
[Em]
I cover
[Gb] the two strings with my one finger.
I know it makes it confusing, I'm sorry, but my fingers are just kind of fat [G] so
I don't [Ab] have any problem covering two [Bb] strings with one finger.
So just [Gm] pretend that I'm doing [D] that.
[G] [Em]
[A] Into this shape, which I'll show on this [Bb] screen.
It's open, open, [A] two, open, [Gb] three, open.
[Em]
[D] From [E]
[D]
[G] [E]
[D]
[G] [Gb] [Em]
the beginning.
[G] [A]
[D] [Gm]
[Em] [D] The sun is surely sinking [A] down.
[E]
[A]
[G] Okay, so that's the beginning.
It's pretty simple.
I'm going to show you in my right hand so you'll kind of see what I'm doing there.
Obviously, in the beginning, [A] with that D [D] chord, you're just finger picking those three strings.
Then on the G chord, you want to hit the [A] bass note, [D] the [Gm] E.
Well, it's not an E, but it's [G] the E string.
[D] That's the first string, second string, and [G] sixth string.
[D]
[G] [D]
[Gm] [A]
That's that [D] A with your pinky down.
[G]
You want to make sure you get that high E string.
It doesn't sound right if you don't hit that [D] E string.
[A]
[E] That's the first three strings [Fm] and the fifth [A] string.
[D]
[A]
[A]
That's just your A [Gb] chord, just hitting the [G] second, third, and fourth strings.
[D]
[A]
[D] [G] [A]
So that's the first part.
The second part [G] pretty much starts [D] the same.
[Gm]
Then you're doing that walk down on the low E.
[Gbm] [D]
Into that E minor [Em] 7.
[Gb] That's the [D] second, third, [E] and sixth string.
Third string.
[A]
First, second, fifth.
So, from the beginning.
[D]
[G] [A]
[D]
[G] [E]
[D] Well, the sun is surely [G]
[E] sinking [A] down, but [Em] the moon is slowly rising.
[G]
[E]
So anyway, that should give you the basics of that opening.
[Bb] I hope it works for you.
If you have any questions, send me an email.
Thanks.
