California, I don't even know you,
[A] taking me away [E] from home
The album's called Utah.
We decided to record ourselves.
We were lucky enough to have some really talented friends, and so we loaded up this truck full of [A] gear, drove up to this cabin in Utah that we had access [A] to, and we set up in this cabin [E] for about two weeks, recorded [B] live to tape, just did it real old [A] school.
Going [D] home with a cast [E]-iron soul
The album is from start to finish.
It's an open book look at the last couple years of our lives.
It is very autobiographical, talking about the feeling of displacement, [F#]
loneliness, leaving home, homesick, trying to chase this thing that you feel like is a little [E] bit crazy of you chasing.
Golden [A]
Age, we wrote that as a result of a conversation we were having.
Yeah, we were just talking about how there's these pockets where people are making stuff with their hands, and there's a sense of community, and American made good, [F#] but you don't see a lot of [E] that necessarily, [E] it's just really here.
It seems like now you find something and it's like made in USA, it's like, oh wow, this is made in America.
What Golden Age is about is when that was the rule rather than the exception.
[A]
California is a song that's really just sort of the shock and awe of leaving Austin and taking that 27 hour drive to LA, and then you get into LA and it's moving way more quickly [B] than anything we grew up with.
[A] We've all moved [E] away from home, we've all taken plunges [B] here and there, and that song is about [A] taking the plunge and then [E] questioning the plunge that you just took.
[B] Someday I'll [A] be going [D] home with cast iron [E] soul.
Cast iron soul, it's the same way, the more you cook with a cast iron pan or a Dutch oven or whatever it may be, it absorbs seasoning and it takes in [E] things and it makes the resulting food [B] better.
The [B] same way that the more you [A] travel, the more you [E] experience, sometimes some things [B] burn here and there, and [A] sometimes stuff gets stuck to [E] the pan, but ultimately you're going to appreciate your [B] life better when you [A] take the influence of the [D] things you enjoy.
