Hi, I'm Jason Faulkner and I'm playing [E] the Roxy tonight, September 13th, part of the filter Revenge of the Sunset Strip.
And I'm getting my revenge on Hollywood, which is where I'm from.
Because it's been a shit place for a long time.
It's gonna [C] get better.
It has to get better.
It can't [Am] get worse.
There's a [F] light right outside [C] of your window
[A] So many [F] eyes never [C] looked your way
[G] Do you know [C] what I mean?
[Am] I [G#] am neighbor [F] in [C]
favor
[Am] Of [G#] human behavior
[F] To the [G] poor savior
[Am] I've been sneaking into the Roxy [D#] stories, which I think is impossible now.
[C] Sneaking into this place.
I snuck into the Waterboys.
Nobody knows the Waterboys.
This great band, ye olde Waterboys.
[A#] And I believe I snuck into Nirvana pre [A]-Nevermind.
I was born in SF and then we moved to [F#] Texas and then came back out here when I was five.
[A]
[D] And my dad got a job teaching at Pepperdine [A] University.
I was in the suburbs.
I was in [D] this place called Agora.
When I was a kid Agora [Bm] was like just dirt roads and you know, it was like I had a [A] Daisy Red Ryder BB gun.
I had that kind of childhood where it's like now it's just an [F#] extension of the suburbs.
It's just a mini mall, [E] but it used [D] to be kind of rural [A] out there.
I was always like a [D] city kid.
Like [Bm] early field trips to the Getty or whatever.
I'd just be [A] like, oh my God, like civilization, like the city.
Traffic and cars and [E] sirens and just kind of [A] chaos.
I was like drawn to that.
So [D] I moved out here when I was like [A] 18.
I've lived on the East side.
I lived, [D] you know, Los Feliz, [Bm] Silver Lake, all that stuff.
And then I just recently moved back to [E] Hollywood.
The song is called New York City and it's nothing personal.
All right.
I [B] was hating on L.A. for a second.
[E] [A]
[E] [B]
[E] [A] [B]
[E]
[A] [B] Well,
[E] [A]
[B] [E] I don't think there's a scene [B] here in this part of town.
I think it's just [F#] like
[B] there's more like commerce over [G] here.
I think the [A] kind of cliquishness of the East side is [B] as ridiculous as the [C#m] Italian [B] shirt, slick back,
way too much cologne [F#] side of, you know, people on this side of town.
I think it's [G] actually [F#] hate both.
I just live in my little guest house [B] and just make music and [E] try and ignore trends and weird [D] people.
Last year I just kind of [D] decided enough time collapsed [E] between records.
It was [D] like seven years.
I was [Am] like, OK, I better finish this record.
[D] So I just [A] kind of retired the band, [C] worked by myself in my studio.
[A] I also just kind of gave up for [Am] a while.
I really [E] did.
Like I hate music business.
It's done nothing [D] to give me like [Am] an ulcer.
So I mean, it's a [A] terrible business.
It's like not [Bm] designed for the artist.
[D] It's still hard even like [Am] doing things independently from a [E] label.
And I've been on like Electra, I've been on Sony, I've been on cool labels like Spin Art [Am] and Sub Pop.
If what you do [D] requires a little bit more [A] creativity [C] as far as how [A] they're going to sell it, they give up too easily.
You can't rely on anybody to like even like design a flyer.
You know, you have to do every, which is cool.
It means you're behind everything.
You can really be proud of it when it works.
But it's also exhausting, you know, having to do every single thing.
I just haven't ever found like a manager or a label or whatever that I could that I can say,
Hey, here's something that you should take care of.
And then they take care of it and it's actually, it exceeds my, you know, my requirements or my expectations.
That's just never [D#] happened.
That's just happened for [F#] other people.
[C#] [E]
