Hello, my name is Marc from jazz guitar lessons.net and today's jazz guitar tip is cycling chords
Which is a straightforward tip you might have heard people if your friends tell you you know
You learn lick or you learn a chord play through all keys.
How should I do it?
Well, you do it through the cycle and often the cycle of fourths
So let me tell you why we should do it
the first reason is obviously you learn all keys through the cycle of fourths or the cycle of fifths, which is
Cycle of fourths is a cycle of inverted fifths
I don't have time for the theory right now
But basically it wraps up around you come back you start and see and you
Play all the keys until you get back to see like on a on a clock, right?
And you will seldom hear me say this and I rarely tell you this is a great technical exercise work your fingers
Because I don't really like the mechanics of playing, you know
I'd rather understand the music before and so I think it's great for you also
So now I'm going to say we're going to cycle
Dominant chords in the cycle of fourth and it's great for your technique
Once you get this under your finger, you get a lot more stuff under your fingers such as two fives
another reason why we should play cycles is
Naturally, the music moves up a fourth.
Well, I'm thinking of the two five one
I'm thinking of five one just general cadences
I cannot explain the whole theory but you'll hear songs in which this happens like autumn leaves
Like all the things you are like I will survive even it's a cycle of
It's a sequence of course that happened naturally in the cycle of fourth
So as byproducts of this when you cycle chords you get an understanding of two five
interpolation where you can add a two five before stuff and you
Understand better the two five cadence the resolution points and you know
Why certain chords happen where in a song because you understand a cycling so how are we going to do it?
We'll cycle dominance and shell voicings shell voicings wink wink.
Remember the last time we looked at this we played the blues
So now's the time to use our three note shells and to play them in the cycle
We won't waste any time on this.
[C] Let's just play them together
You can rewind this video rewatch it as many times as as you have to to play this probably
The note is C here 8 fret ready.
[Am] Watch out.
There's several slides.
Okay, a one two, three [C] four C
[F] F
[A#]
B flat [D#] E flat you continue [G#] in flats one two, [C] three [C#] four
[F#]
G flats
[B] you continue with [C#] B [D] three [E] four a
[A] [D]
B
[G] G and
[C] brackets, so guess what we're done we did every
Dominant seven shell in all the 12 [N] keys, but we cycle through the cycle for it
Now you probably understand why we must learn strings six and five inside out to know where the root
The root notes are the bass notes, right?
So what you should do on your own from this point is to learn the same thing with major seven shell with minor seven shells
Go figure we have the two five one, which is minor seven dollar seven major seven and I had to get you started
I I printed a few things for you.
I'm not going to to let you suffer through the process
This is how you get started around fret eight and you rerun the same process with the same roots as we did
But you do do this on your own
Of course, if you're interested in finding out how to cycle chords and and more things
There's this course which is called lesson two for chords that I devised myself
Of course feels like a private lessons about 60 minutes long.
We cycle all chord qualities including the major seven
We have rootless voicings tritone substitution minor two five one
Advanced jazz blues, etc
So it's a great course if you know your chords kind of in jazz or if you've already taken the introduction course
And it's very popular.
It's on you.
Demi, you know hundreds of students have taken it successfully good
So next time I think it's going to be our last jazz guitar tip.
There's more chords coming up
I'm not I'm not going to to tell you what we're doing going to do what it relates to inversions and stuff like that.
So
Between now and then what you should practice is really those dominant seven major seven minor seven cycles and you should really feel
confident enough to let go of the root and replay the same things without the bass note and still understand that you're on the
same chords and
Indeed, if you're more advanced use 13th and 9th, which we talked about in other tips
So until next time I'm mark from jazz guitar lessons dotnet improve your jazz guitar playing with a real teacher
