_ _ _ _ _ Hi, Chris Thomas from Martin [Gb] Guitar here standing out in front of [G] Chicago's Strained Riviera [Gbm] Club
Where in just a few minutes hometown boys [N] Wilco will be taking the stage.
Now earlier today
We paid a visit to the loft
Wilco's private recording studio and [E] rehearsal space where I had a chance to ask front man and [N] songwriter Jeff Tweedy a few questions
about his music and Martin [D] Guitars
_ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ I'm _ [D] _ _ coming home, [A] I'm coming home, [G] via Chicago _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ I got a [Ebm] guitar when I was six I think and [F] I took a few lessons
And I really hated it because it was in a steaming hot room upstairs above a department store in downtown Belleville
_ So I threw my guitar in the closet, but that didn't stop me from telling everyone in the world that I knew how to play the guitar
_ _ _ [N] So I had an accident, a bicycle accident when I was like 12
_ [E] I was laid up for a summer and I figured [Eb] I looked in my closet and I saw there was a guitar in there
And I figured [C] maybe I should learn a few chords before someone calls me out on this
_ [F] So this is about, I guess about 12 years, that would be a shorter answer since I was 12 years old
Do you recall your first Martin?
_ Yeah, I do.
_ [Bb] _ _
[Gb] I bought the first Martin that I ever had was this little 018
_ _ _ And we were getting ready to make _ [D] Mermaid Avenue, [E] the Mermaid Avenue record
The first [A] one, and I think I [Gb] had just been to the archives _ _ to look at Woody Guthrie's lyrics
I said, I remember having [E] records, people don't know, a record we did with Billy [D] Bragg, a series of records
Where we took Woody Guthrie lyrics and put them to music
[A] And I really didn't have any instruments from _ _ the 30s, from the time period, [E] or earlier even
Anything that I felt like, I mean, I know Woody lived [D] into the 60s
But for some reason I just felt [Gb] like I wanted to have something that he could have possibly had in his hands when he was really [Ab] thriving
_ _ _ Is there anything unique that sticks in your mind about making The Whole Love compared to other albums? _
_ [F] _ Well, _ _ The Whole Love is the first record that we were able to _ _ _ complete
[C] Every step of [Em] the process was [F] up here at The Loft, including mixing
Everything else is, every other record has had a few little excursions into another studio or a [Ebm] mixing studio
And [D] outside of mastering, which you never really do in your own studio
[F] We did it all up here, and that feels really good
It feels good to [B] finally have crossed [F] that threshold where we know we can kind of get it all done in one spot
_ Now regarding the forthcoming Jeff Tweedy Custom Artist Edition from Martin Guitar
It boasts some very unique [Gm] vintage features like a sunburst mahogany tom and Foden style inlay
[B] Was there a particular guitar that inspired some of those [Gm] choices or a combination of different guitars?
[F] I think this guy probably had, _ as far as aesthetics, had the most impact on what we tried to do with the guitar _
_ I've always [E] felt like this is a really romantic looking [F] instrument
And kind of uncharacteristic of a lot of Martins that you see
_ It will be the [Gm] first fully FSC [B] _ certified guitar, eco-friendly guitar that you've done with an artist
[F] How do you feel about that?
Oh, [G] I'm thrilled, _ I'm [F] surprised that that's the case
_ _ But I'm honored [E] that [C] my name will be on it and that we can work [D] together to make that happen
_ I'd be remiss without mentioning our [G] friend Woody
_ Who probably [Fm] has a lot [C] more to do with the decisions [F] that have gone into those specifics of the guitar _
[Bb] Did a really great job and I'm proud to [Ebm] take the credit
[C] _ _ [F] _ _ [C] _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [F] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
