Jerry Burgan on Nick Reynolds' Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Well, hi, my name is Jerry Bergen and
This is a Martin model single odd 18 tenor guitar that was made in 1959
By the Martin company and used for several years by Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio
Nick's wife Leslie asked me if I would tell a little bit of the background about this guitar.
It was given to me in
1967 I
Was working on a we5 album in the Kingston Trios studio in San Francisco
Columbus recorders and we played this song and I told the producer our manager Frank Werber who was also the Kingston Trios manager
That the song would sound really great.
If it had a tenor guitar in it.
[E] They could go
with a nice bright clip [G#] sound that and
Frank said well, that's a good idea.
There's a whole bunch of
Old cast-off guitars over at in the guest room at my house
You know on your way home
I lived in Mill Valley at the time and so he said, you know stop off and see if there's one in there
They'll play sure enough.
They're under the bed in the guest room.
I found
Several guitar cases one of them was a long body tenor the kind that Nick used when the trio first appeared
On their their first couple of albums.
There were a couple of guitars that were this [N] shape
I first saw it on the make way album
Because of the unique grain on the face of this instrument and the fact [G#] that it's a very good photo of the guitar on makeway
This appears to perhaps be the actual guitar that's in that picture
I can't say for sure but my first guitar had been a tenor guitar
And I was really excited about the prospect of actually playing one that had been [Dm] nicks.
This one has [N] a
Pretty healthy chip that's taken out of the the headstock there
It only tunes in a certain range course Nick only used it in a certain range just you know, these few frets in here
It's got finished cracks all over it from exposure to radical temperature changes and traveling all around the world
in fact the case this guitar came out of when I found it was a
Chipboard Martin case with about two dozen airplane claim tags on it
I shuttered to think of them perhaps shipping these instruments around in those looks like it's been through the wars
But I took it into the studio and we put it on on the song all the time
It added a real sparkle to the rhythm track.
And so I said, you know, I gotta get one of these
It's this was really kind of magic and Frank said well keep that one.
So I did and
I've played it on
Virtually every album that we've done since then I use it all the time
When Leslie asked me if I [F#] would talk a little bit about the guitar
I thought it might be nice to play something on it.
So one of my favorite
Kingston trail [D#] songs that never really got a lot of
Activity was called the river is wide and it happens to have been on that make way album
I pulled it out and looked and lo and behold Nick Reynolds had the copyright
so it's a probably a traditional [F] song that he rewrote [E] and [A] [E] I got together [F#] with my wife Debbie and
our friend solo Chan [G#] and
We made this [A] recording
[E] The
[A] [E]
river is why I?
Can't get old
Nor [C#m] do I Light [F#m] wings
[A] Fly [B] build [G#m] me a bow

[G] Jim when [Am] first it's new
