Pickup Truck Song
I'll tell you a little story about this song.
My favorite parts was I used to go down to [E] Lukenbacher and ride around with Hondo and his old pickup truck.
He had [D] an old green Chevy pickup.
The outside of it looked like it had been beat all over with a tire iron.
When he opened the door all this junk [F#m] rolled out of it.
These old snuff cans and jumper [D] cables and chains and a piece of wood he's whittling on.
Maybe an old can he'd used somewhere.
My favorite part though was riding home from Lukenbach late on a big full moon night.
We'd turn the lights off.
Kind of ride along in the moonlight.
Cross the top of this one hill and Hondo would say,
Hey, I think it's right.
We're going to go for the coasting record.
[F#m] He'd shut the truck off and we'd go down this little grade in the road.
[D] I'd say, Hondo, how far is the coasting record so far?
He said, that big tree up there at the end of the hill.
[F#] We'd be all leaning in the [D] cab trying to get the truck going a little bit farther.
I mean, I didn't know how serious it was.
I mean, going for a record and everything.
I had to try my best.
Some of the fun you can have in your pickup truck.
Yeah, I used to look [G] for him [D] Saturdays.
Me and my [A] grandpa would get away.
[G] I'd finish [E] pick up and suck him [D] gold.
We had a couple [G] chores that we had to do.
[D] It didn't take [A] long before we were through.
[G] Then we'd let the [A] pickup truck just [D] wander around.
[G] We'd make our way to the [A] county now.
[D] Then I was waving and we [Bm] saw someone.
[G] Grandpa [Em] made up a song as he [E] rode along.
[G] He'd post off [A] in out there.
[D] We'd get speed and we'd [Bm] check out the man.
[G] And then put the [A] same road twice on the [D] way back home.
[G] [A] [D] [Bm]
[G] [A] [D]
Spent a few [G] years down a run of three.
[D] I spent two or [A] three in New York City.
[G] And I moved back to [E] Texas tired of what I [D] had, you know.
I'd go to Luke and [G] Bob on [D] Saturdays.
Because Hondo had a way [A] to brighten up my day.
[G] He always made me [A] laugh when we rode in his [D] pickup truck.
[G] We'd make our way to the [A] county now.
[D] Then I was waving and we [Bm] saw someone.
[G] And I'd make [Em] up a tale as I [A] rode along.
[G] He'd post off [A] in out there.
[D] He'd get you and we'd check [Bm] out the man.
[G] And then put the [A] same road twice on the [D] way back home.
[G] [A] [D] [Bm]
[G] [A] [D]
Well, I miss Grandpa [G] and Hondo too.
[D] I really miss [A] things that we used to do.
[G] The last week I went [A] out and bought me an old pickup [D] truck.
Now me and my kids [G] spend Saturdays.
[D] We do fun [A] things in a simple way.
[G] We love to start the [E] day with a ride in the pickup [D] truck.
[G] We'd make our way to the [A] county now.
[D] We'd always wave when we see [Bm] someone.
[G] The kids love to make [Em] up songs to [A] roll along.
[F#m]
[G] Post off in [A] out there.
[D] We'd get stamps and we'd check [Bm] out the man.
[G] And then take the same [A] road twice on the way [D] back home.
[G] [A] [D] [Bm]
[G] After [A] fun's been lost on the way [F#m] back home.
[D]
