Hi, I'm here with Luca Benedetti
Fellow New York guitarist and colleague and we're here checking out the 68
Custom Princeton and I guess what makes it different is I mean it looks the same it has I always like these
Princetons with the little frame around the grill.
Yeah, so this is the original and this is the reissue
What year is this?
I believe it's a 68.
Okay.
I mean just because it looks like this one
I know you did some homework on this.
What do you got?
Well, I know one of the bigger differences is they
They put a selection speaker in this
Instead of a Jensen that's gonna change the tone a bit.
Let's take a look at that
This speaker the the 1030.
I've been playing on it a couple gigs here and there.
It sounded really good
Yeah, that's one thing I like about the selection speaker is it doesn't have it break in time
they sound great as soon as you put them in so and they [N] modify the
tone circuit from what I read to be a
Little more touch sensitive and it breaks up sooner
That's what we want something to do with the negative feedback got
Reduced a bit.
Yeah.
I mean I always thought negative feedback was something on a questionnaire
[Em] Anyway
[D] They [E] did
Are certainly
Okay, let's mess it up.
[G] Okay.
Let's see [A] what this let's see what it can handle
So this is with the bass on 10 and I'm tuned down to [D#] a low E
[E] That's pretty good sometimes my selection [D#] doesn't pick that up
[E] [D#m]
[C#m] [C]
[E] [D#]
[C#] [E] [F#m]
[Em] [G] I've never tuned a low E.
[D] I do it a lot part of my [A] stick
[D]
[E]
[D] Got to do a lot of
[A] But it's handling it pretty good.
Oh, yeah
[D] yeah, the gain [F#] stage happens a lot sooner it feels like [A] like
[E]
[A] [C] [Am]
[D]
[Bm] That's what the ant that at six or six and a half right now, yeah
[A] Yeah
I don't know.
I always play a
Break it sounds it sounds a martial [E] esque.
So we haven't checked out the vibrato on this
[B] Sure, my favorite vibrato is on a vibro champ those like a silver face vibro champ
I mean, it's just nothing sounds better.
I've done sessions where the guys like hey, can you get that?
You know that vibrato that Dwayne Eddie sound if they're that articulate or let's say James Bond
I'm gonna do with the bias [A] of the amp like the hotter you [E] bias the amp the weaker the [E] tremolo is because it's
[A] I didn't know that [D] I thought I heard though that a vibro champ has like a special
Wiring [C#m] that's unique to all other fender amps.
Yeah, but anyway, let's check it out.
Let's see how this [E] one sounds
Perfect.
Wow, that's pretty good.
[E]
[A]
That is pretty good
[G] Let's
Let's see [E] what my 68 how that [N] compares.
I mean, I think this is it's gonna
It's going this is gonna win because of that vibrato sound
[E]
[D#] No, [A] that's this is this gets this get the vibrato gets an a-plus I
Don't know.
I think it's always on
Is it on?
No, it must be off
That's what I'm talking about it's weak, you know, I mean that's a good sounding amp
[D#] So thanks for coming early to discuss this it made it a lot better for me and yeah, it's a great a man
Yeah, it seems like it's they did a real nice job.
I really like the light too.
That's that's really nice
Nice little touch.
I'd be happy to have this as a back line.
Oh
For sure.
I mean I'm I'm you know
Raising the bar to where it's against the the vintage one and it seems to compete real nicely
So and you can leave your vintage one at home.
Yep.
Thanks Luca
Okay
[E] So upon moving, you know in New York in 2001
I started using the Princeton and I was concerned at first that it wouldn't be loud enough
But I found that you know it just
almost on every occasion has come through for me whether it's playing the Letterman show or doing a true fire video or playing the
55 bar or playing
Alongside a Pete Townsend at Shepherd's Bush.
The Princeton has come through for me
[Am] [B] [F#]
