Next guest is one of those overnight [B] successors who only took 12 years to make it.
But during that time when he wasn't driving a truck, [E] he was teaching special education and entertaining the bar and beer pitcher set.
I guess you could say he's [B] a man of the people.
[C#] Maybe that's why he writes about them so well.
Ladies and gentlemen, Jim Croce.
[D] Like
[F#] [A]
[E] the pine trees [D#] lining the winding [C#m] road, I got [A] a name, I got a name.
[A] [E] Like the singing [B] bird and the [C#m] croaking toad, I got [A#] a name, I got [B] a name.
[G#m] And I [A] carry it with me [E] like my daddy did, [G#] but I'm [C#m] living the dream that he [B] kept here.
[G#m] Moving me [A] down the highway, [G#m] rolling [C#] me down the highway, [A] moving ahead so life won't [B] pass me [E] by.
Like the [B] north wind whistling [C#m] down the sky, I [A] got a song, I [E] got a song.
[E] Like [B] the willful will and [C#m] the baby's cry, I [F#] got a song, I [B] got a song.
[G#m] And [A] I carry it with [E] me and I sing it loud.
[G#] If it gets [C#m] me nowhere, [F#] I go [B] there proud.
Moving [A] me down the highway, [G#m] rolling me down [C#] the highway, moving [B] ahead so life won't pass me [E] by.
[B] [C#m] [A]
[B] [E]
[B] [C#m] [F#]
[B] [E] I'm gonna go there free.
Like [B] a fool I am and [C#m] I'll always be.
[A] I got a dream, [B] I [F#] got a dream.
They can [B] change their mind, but they [C#m] can't change me.
I [F#] got a dream, I [B] got a dream.
[G#m] I [A] know I could share it [E] if you want me [G#] to.
If [C#m] you're going my way, [F#] [B] I'll go with you.
[G#m] Moving me [A] down the highway, [G#m] rolling me [C#] down the highway, [A] moving [B] ahead so life won't [D] pass me by.
[G#m] Moving me [A] down the highway, [G#m] rolling me down [C#] the highway, [A] moving ahead [B] so life won't pass me [B] by.

Thank you [Em] very much.
It's really so relaxing to be in the summertime.
You know, it's so much better than winter when you're all dried up and feeling cold.
Especially back where we come from, Pennsylvania.
Helen, it's a real treat and I really enjoy it.
You know, it's so much relaxing too to be in these kind of clothes.
[E] I don't usually get dressed up.
The last time I got dressed up was a few years ago when I bought one of those big long fringed leather jackets
with the fringes that hang down to the ground.
And I went out to New York City one day with a guitar, jumped in the cab,
and when I went to get out, I closed my fringes in the cab door.
[D#] And if you've ever seen anybody in a world of trouble, you should have seen me with one hand with a guitar in it,
one arm in the cab door with all my fringes stuck, and me banging on the window and running at 15 miles an hour.
It was really something.
But experiences, you know, and characters especially are in a lot of the songs I write.
This is a song about a guy I was in the army with.
That was an experience.
It was at Fort Dix in New Jersey that I met [C#] this guy.
He was not made to climb the tree of knowledge, as they say, but he was strong.
So nobody had ever told him what to do, and after about a week down there, he said,
later for this, and decided to go home.
So he went AWOL, which means to take your own vacation.
And he did, but he made the mistake of coming back at the end of the month to get his paycheck.
And I don't know if you've ever seen handcuffs put on anybody, but it was snap.
And that was the end of it for a good friend of mine who I wrote this tune [G] about named Leroy Brown.
[C]
[C]
[D] Well the [G] south side of Chicago is [A] a better part of town.
[B] And if you go down [C] there you better just [D] beware of a man [A] named Leroy Brown.
Now [G] Leroy, more than trouble, you see, [A] you're standing by for six foot four.
[B] All the downtown [C] ladies call him tree top [D] lover, all the men just [A] call him sir.
And [G] it's better, better than Leroy Brown.
It's better than the whole damn town.
[B] Better than old [C] King Kong.
And meaner than the [G] junkyard dog.
Now Leroy, he'll gamble up [A] any like else fancy clothes.
And he'll [B] like to wave [C] him diamond rings upon everybody's nose.
[G] He got a custom Continental.
He [A] got an Eldorado too.
[B] He got a .32
gun in his pocket for fun.
He got [D] a razor in [A] his shoe.
[G] And it's better, better than Leroy [A] Brown.
The better man in the whole damn town.
[B] Better than old [C] King Kong.
And meaner than the junkyard [A] dog.
Well it was [G] Friday about a week ago.
[A] Leroy shooting dice.
[B] And at the edge of the bar sat a girl named [D] Doris.
And ooh that girl looked nice.
Well he cast [C] his eyes off [G] on her.
And the [A] trouble soon began.
[B] Leroy Brown [C] learned to listen by the messing with the wife of a jealous [A] man.
And [G] it's better, better than Leroy Brown.
[A] The better man in the whole damn town.
Better than old King [C] Kong.
[D] And meaner than the [G] junkyard dog.
Well damn two men took to fighting.
[A] And when they pulled down from the floor.
[B]
Leroy looked [C] like a cheap softball.
So with a couple of [A] pieces gone.
And it's [G] better, better than Leroy Brown.
The better man in the whole damn [B] town.
Better than [C] old King Kong.
And meaner than the [A] junkyard dog.
Yes [G] it's better, better than Leroy Brown.
[A] In the whole damn [B] town.
Better than [C] old King Kong.
And meaner than the [G] junkyard dog.
[B] Yes he was better than old King [C] Kong.
[C] And meaner than the junkyard dog.
[G] [N] [D]
