Start Jamming...
All right, so now we're going to take a look at the solo to Voodoo Child.
I'll go ahead and perform the solo up to tempo with the backing track,
and then we'll come back and break it down.
So here it is full tempo.
[Eb] [Db] [Eb]
[Bbm] [Ebm] [Bb]
[Ebm] [Eb]
[Db] [Ebm] [Ab]
[Eb]
[Ebm] [Eb]
[F]
[Eb] [Bb] [Eb]
OK, so now we're going to break down the solo.
But before we get into the notes, we've got to talk about the tuning.
This song, along with Little Wing, is tuned down a half step.
So [Ab] if you want to play along with me or play along with the original recording,
here's an A.
And again.
[Eb] All right, you're back, you're in tune, ready to go.
This solo is in the key of E.
We're going
to draw primarily from the E minor pentatonic scale,
along with a little bit of E Dorian in there.
And the first phrase goes like this.
[Ab] [Abm]
[Eb]
So the solo starts off and is played primarily in 12th position.
We'll bend a whole step from the 15th fret of the B string
before releasing that note.
Now [Bb] 12 to 15 on the B.
[Db]
[Ab] Strike 15, bend up a whole step.
So here's what we've done so far.
[Db]
[F] Here's the next part of the solo.
[Fm] [Abm]
[Bb] [Gb] [C] So here we're going to start off with a pre-bend.
[G] [D]
[Em] [Bm] [E]
[C] Well, I've just finished doing a DVD [G] entitled
Jimi [D] Hendrix, The Solos, in which I [A] take a look at five [Em] Hendrix solos,
note for note.
Now what's unique about these lessons is that not only do I teach the solos,
but [G] the DVD package comes [D] with a CD that has the backing [A] tracks played
at [Em] three different tempos.
[E] So you [Ab] can work your way up, starting [Eb] off nice and slow.
There's a [D] slow, a medium, and a normal tempo for each of [A] these solos.
[B] [D]
[E] Now during these lessons, we take a look at the range of Hendrix material.
Some of the crazy stuff, such as the solo for Voodoo [D] Child,
a lot of fast, repetitive, [E] bluesy licks, [D] as well as some
of the real melodic stuff, such as the solo to The [F] Wind Cries Mary.
That's always been [Eb] one of my favorite [F] solos.
[G] I always go through that solo with my students
because it's a [F] great lesson in [Eb] how you can try and solo [D] over a chord
progression and [F] not necessarily follow [D] each chord
and stay in the quote unquote correct key.
[G] But somehow Hendrix really makes it work amazingly [Bb] well,
when theoretically what he's doing shouldn't work so well.
But it just
