Big party in Nashville last night you go ahead and whoop it up with all the winners.
I
Had part of a margarita last night
It's a confession and I don't even have to do it I'm a Baptist
[Eb] [N]
That was good because I posted I posted a picture of you on our website because I knew you were gonna win and
And it was a picture of him having a part of a glass of rose in Paris and that was like in September and he
Looked so happy that I thought we don't get to see we have a name for him [Eb] when he does this part of margarita
or an 8 16th of a glass of rose [Cm] a
[B]
You're running into [Ab] Johnny Springbren
[N] Watch out Watch out
Big party up there?
[G] Big party
[C] Did you [Db] pick up my awards?
[C] Well, it was discussed
[D]
[Eb]
I'm gonna be back
In my next career I'm [B] coming back
I'm coming home
I got [D] loaners
In [G]
the meantime
[Bm] [C]
[G] [D]
[G] [Em] I don't get to play this song enough
[F] I love this song I really do
And I'm gonna be back
[G]
[Bb] Most people know the story of how I got here Jerry Jeff [Ab] Walker brought me down here
And I became a [F] 1947 hacker
[Bm]
What [A] a lot of people don't know is when I was when I was living with him working in a garage while I was waiting to get a job in [Eb] Miami
[Db] I got into a [E] book of poems by Kenneth Patchen [D] that Jerry [Ab] Jeff had at his house
And I [Gb] just kind of I kind of loved the portrait I loved the story and I loved I didn't know anything about it
It's great when you discover great [Gb] writers that you didn't know anything about [Db] or great songwriters or anything like that so
[Ab] [G]
And it happened at the right [Ab] time because [E] I was reading all this [C] Kenneth Patchen stuff and he died very young
And and [G] then I was going out trying to deal with the you know [Eb] after the record [N] deal came along having to get into it
[G] It kind of puts some interesting situations and challenges and decisions that you have to [Gb] make
And at that point [Ab] there's nobody out there but you
[G] And that's why you [C] know narcissism yes I am a confirmed [G] narcissist because there was nobody [G] back there who gave a shit
You were on your own and you better be good
So [C] this is a this is for [N] Jerry Jeff and for the great Kenneth [G] Patchen
[B] Death on a Pottery Port
[Bm] [C] [G]
[C] [D]
[G]
I once knew [Am] a poet
[G] [C]
Lived before [D] his time
He [G] [Bm] and his [C]
dogs for a run
Listened to a wily [D] grind
[Em] Words to [Bm] make you happy
[F]
Words [D] to make [C] you cry
[D] Please no
[G]
And then [Bm] one day [Em] the [C] poet
If you [G] are I'll just [C] take my blood block off
[D] Suddenly did [G] die of burn
But he left behind [C] a closet
[D]
[C] Filled with verse and [D]
rhyme
[C] [D] Went through some strange [G] transaction
[C] One word's printed in the [D] time
[E] [G] [Em]
And [Bm] everybody's searching
[C] For the king of [F] underground
[C]
[D] Well [G] they found him down [C] in Florida
[G] [D] In tombstone foreground
[G]
Now everybody [D]
knows the line
[C] From his book he [Am] calls for an unknown
[C] I wonder [D] if he knows he's doing
[C]
[Gb] Quite [G] this fine
His books they're [C] all the same
[G] His
[C] words return [D] to songs
[G] They had his brother [Bm] on [C] a talk show
[G]
[C] Though they never got [E] along
Now [Em]
he's [Bm] called the mortal
Hell [C] he's even taught [Fm] in school
[D] [G]
Say he used his [C] talent
[G] [C] For a most [Db]
[G] proficient tool
But he left [Gb] all of [C]
his [G] royalty
[C] To spooner his old [D] hound
I love this part
He could own [Gb] a [Em] steak and bacon
[G] And [C]
a doghouse ten [D] feet around
[Em] And everybody [Bm] wonders
[C] Did he really [Fm] lose his [D] mind
[G] No he [Bm]
was [C] just a poor
[G] Who lived [D] before his [G]
[C] time
[G]
[Bm] He was [C] just a poor
[G]
Who [C] lived
[D] before [Am] [G]
his time
[Em]
[G] [C]
[D] [C] [G]
[Gm] [N]
Thank you!
